The final question: Linux or Windows server ?

    Hi

I need to choose over a php site running on a Linux or Windows server. What is the opinion of who have experience with php sites running on Windows servers (production servers) ? With IIS or Apache ?
Positive points (i think) about each server type:
    Windows
    1. Database access: i have great experience with Access databases

    Linux
    1. Stability

    And other points ?

Are you administering the server? If not, go with Linux. Screw Access DB's and learn to use mysql. It's cheaper and you'll be far better off.

Oh, and if you do go with a Windows server, use Apache... not that IIS crap.

It will all depend on what you're going to do. If you're the administrator and don't know anything about Linux, I don't suggest you setup a Linux server because you won't know what to do with it. If you have experience with Access and not any other database software and don't feel like learning another, stick with Windows because being stubborn is pretty common. If you need uptime, go with the Linux because it's more stable, unless you are planning to rely on Microsoft based products.

If you're looking for the best server to run a PHP-based webserver from, I suggest Apache on Linux, the latest stable version of PHP, along with the latest stable version of MySQL, and I'd also suggest the latest version of phpMyAdmin.

Just like ober said, Linux is all free, and Microsoft based products are all not-free. If you don't have the money to support it; don't use it. You'll probably be better off with the free Linux stuff.. but it'll depend on what you know and what you want to do.

Are you going to be actually setting all this up or do you mean your looking for a host and want to know wether your after linx or Windows?

My sites being run on linux and I don't find it a problem that I haven't got a Linux box yet. If you arn't setting the server up your self you should be able to use a Linux one wether or not you have used it before.
