    Installing 2nd HD

    I hope u can help me with this, guys
    I am trying to installing a 2nd hd but I am not getting anywhere.
    I set the 1st hd to CS and on the end of the cable, the 2nd hd to CS also, but in the middle of the cable. But when I check the bios, it's not recognizing the 1st hd with the os as the master.
    What am I doing wrong guys?

    Set the main hard drive as Master.

    If you want a hard drive to be master, don't set it as CS. The BIOS doesn't magically figure out which one has an OS and which one doesn't.

    Then set the other one to slave.

    I tried that, but the darn thing will not work.
    The main hd is a maxtor and the 2nd is a quantum.
    when I checked the bios it had the quantum as the Prim Ide Master, and maxtor as the Prim Ide Slave

    The new harddrive MUST be the slave and the orginal HD must be the master unless you are planning on installing an os on it right away

    • If it is relevant state the version of Visual Studio/.Net Framwork you are using (2002/2003/2005)

    You didn't try what I said otherwise your BIOS wouldn't have said:

    Switch the jumper and/or position on the cable (some mother boards are picky about the master should be at the top and slave in the middle of the cord, some are not)

    Hi again guys.
    I got the main hd to be the master and the 2nd to be the slave.
    I saw the config in the bios.
    the problem is, when I have both hd installed, the computer will not pass the bios setup display screen. it will not start windows
    but when I take out the 2nd hd, everything is ok.
    can anyone tell me what's wrong

    Sounds to me like both Hard Drives are set as master or both are slave or both are CS. Are you sure they're setup correctly?

    I don't think it is the cable, bc there is only one way to put in the cable for the hd.
    VisualAd, I did not get any boot up error message. it just stops at the line in the post screen where u see the line that mouse and keyboard are enabled.

    Some mother boards will only boot from the master hard disk in the first IDE.

    Ensure that your boot drive is the master and is plugged into the IDE plug named IDE 1.

    Did that VisualAd. I have the master hd on the 1st IDE and the 2nd hd on the 2nd IDE. I then checked the bios setup and it had the setup correct, i.e
    Primary Master = 1st IDE
    Primary Slave = 2nd IDE
    but it refuses to start windows with both hd. If I take out any of the hd, then it will boot up.

    If it is fine when just 1 hard drive is gone, then the hard drives seem like they work fine. The ONLY thing I can think of is that they each still arn't set as master and slave and are conflicting when connected.

    If you have one HD plugged into each IDE then set them both as master.

    You only need to set one as slave if they are on the same cable.

    Does it has anything to do with the type hd?
    I have 1 Maxtor and 1 Quantum.
    The Maxtor is my main hd, which I set as the master and I set the Quantum as the slave, which is connected to the 2nd IDE.

    Makes no difference on the type, but set the quantum as master if it is the only thing on the 2nd IDE channel. If there is a CD-ROM or something on the 2nd IDE channel and it is set as the same as the 2nd hard drive, that'll also cause conflicts

    Do both harddrives have a Operating system on them?

    If The Maxtor has an operating system then it should be like this:

    Maxtor = Primary Master
    Quantum = Primary Slave

    If The Quantum has an operating system then it should be like this:

    Maxtor = Primary Slave
    Quantum = Primary Master

    Yes ABX, both hd has an os on it. the Quantum has win95, and the Maxtor has winMe. the Maxtor is my main hd and I only want to copy some info from the Quantum.
    this is how the system is setup:
    Prim Master = Maxtor = 1st ide
    Prim Slave = Quantum = 2nd ide
    Sec Master = DVD Rom = 3rd ide
    Sec Slave = CD Burner = 4th ide
    I DO NOT want the Quantum to be the master bc I dont think it will work with my burner.

    You need to track doen the problem. Do the following:
    1. Unplug all IDE devices and put in the qunatum and configure it to primary master.

      Attempt to boot the system. Remember to update the BIOS first though. If the hard disk is not faulty then the system will boot from that disk.

      If this does not work try plugging the device into the other position on the IDE cable as it could be the cable that's faulty.
    2. Now unplug all IDE devices except the two hard disks. Plug one into IDE1 and the other into IDE2 and set them both as master.

      Update the BIOS and attempt to Boot. The system should boot from IDE1, however the system may get confused with to master boot devices. In most BIoS you can select the order in which the BIOS will boot devices.

      Again if this doesn't work try different positions on the cable to eliminate any fault with the IDE cables.
    3. Now plug everything in except for the DVD ROM. With the following configurations:

      IDE1 Master = Maxtor
      IDE2 Master = CD-RW
      IDE2 Slave = Quantum
    4. If the above works try this configuration:

      IDE1 Master = Maxtor
      IDE2 Slave = DVD-ROM
      IDE2 Master = CD-RW
      IDE2 Slave = Quantum

    The problem can be caused by faults with the following:
    Picky BIOS
    Hard Disk
    M/Board
    Cables

    Once you find whats caseing the problem you'll be able to work your way around it.
