have you made any changes to the system recently? downloaded any updates, patches, new hardware?

Reinstall it over the old installation. Works 99% of the time for all windows versions

Yes, I downloaded a program, didn't like it, and uninstall it.
That's when all hell broke loose.

well if it won't boot to safe mode, then i think the easiest thing to do is to reinstall windows. there's a version of safe mode that where you can load one driver at a time, and that could possible get you in with minimum configuration but i cannot remember how to access it (although i am sure its listed on the ms knowledge base if you wish to give it a shot)
i was almost expecting you to have installed new hardware that it didn't like.
one last thing, how long have you let it sit at the slash screen? have you tried giving it an hour or so to get past that?

yes, that is what he is saying. or better yet, install ME, then back up all your data, format and install 2000...

just throw in the windows ME disk and run the install... its not garunteed to work, but there is a fairl good chance it will. It could have been caused by a virus (you not being able to boot up) I know that happened to me last week on windows 2000. so re-install and all will be well... well... not all, but most.

i think its easiest.
do you have a recovery disk from the manufacture? sometimes they have recovery software on them that can save a reinstall but if you don't have it reinstalling will be easier. also, if you have bought from dell or another manufacture you may have some option to talk to their support people and they can walk you thru that.
and 2000 or XP would be an improvement over winME

Win 3.1/95/98/2k/NT are all improvements over WinMe. Even XP is.

Hey guys...
I reinstalled winME last night, but the darn thing is still the same...
it just hangs at the winME logo screen.
I just want to get back into the system to backup my data and get rid of winME. Any ideas what could be wrong ?

You are going to need to take out any cards you have in your system except what you need it to run.
i would unhook the cdrom, network card, a drive, sound card, etc.
start with just video and ram. and of course hard drive.
then try to boot it. and add them back one at a time if its succesful. sounds like a hardware failure also.
actually let me revise....easiest things first. if you have spares lying around, try a new mouse and a new keyboard. i suspect the mouse in some way, if there's no compatible driver or its not connected right it could cause the pc to hang. i have had the happen when i put an MS mouse on a system that only had a logitec driver.
make sure they keyboard and mouse are secure and working, if that doesn't do it, skip to the top of my post and try that.

blow out the conection for the keyboard first. sometimes dust is the culprit.
then take the keyboard to a working pc, and see if it comes back to life. then its the motherboard. if not its the keyboard.
since the problem could still be something else, i recommend confirming weather the keyboard works this way, rather then taking a working keyboard to the pc first. do that as the next step if the keyboard is dead.

The keyboard is not dead bc I used it to get into dos.
I tried a few things to c if I could get back into windows.
I check the registry using dos. It check out ok. I even did a scanreg /fix and scanreg /restore to c if the registry was the problem, then reinstall winME, but no luck. So I guess I will have to open up the machine.

yea its time to start taking things out and see if that's doing it.
make sure you blow everything out. dust can kill you and more times then not make what could have been quick fix, take for ever

as a last resort, take the hard drive out or your comp, then put it into a friends (who has a burner) then burn your data and format the drive...

Ok guys... now this is really frustrating
I know it's not a hware problem bc I used the keyboard in dos and the mouse when reinstalling windows.
I reinstalled windows multiple times, but the stupid thing keep hanging up at the logo screen. I'm going to get rid of winME as soon as I can get back on and do a full backup.
Will it work if I rename the windows folder and create a new windows folder?

umm... it might... maybe, but if worse comes to worse, just take the HD out and put it in another computer as the slave, then get all the data off it...

it can still be a hardware problem ,and sounds like it is.
this is obviously not normal windows me behavior, somethings wrong else wher.e just putting a new OS on it will probably not fix the problem.,
sounds to me like the motherboard may be going. just because the keyboard works, there are still several points of failure. the hard drive, the connector where the keyboard plugs in. i have seen a bad A drive connector on a motherboard prevent windows from loading. there are still many things that could be wrong with this. you need to take out all your perhipheral cards and try to boot with just the video card and hard drive.
also, a corrupt driver on a card or pheripheral can prevent the computer from getting past the splash screen. that's the other reason to disconect everything you don't need to do the system. also could be bad ram. if you have two ram chips you may want to take one out and see if it loads, then switch, although your ram is probably fine. but one never knows
