    Car AC

I took a test drive of a Maruti Versa, and the car is pretty 'cool', both in terms of its looks and handling and in terms of its AC. Now I am only upset about one fact that it runs on petrol and gives only about 9-10kmpl (probably with AC on). I want to know if the car AC can be set up to draw power from a car battery and not from the engine.

Any tips, suggestions, insights or links?

I thinkt he AC draws too much power to just run right off the battery.. it needs the engine to run properly

yep. kliemna is correct. You cant draw power off the battery. And even if you do, the engine will have to make up for that so it makes no difference.

It would be more efficient to go straight to the AC instead of roundabouting your way through the alternator and battery. (In this house we obey the laws of thermodynamics!)

just a reasonable american question...what's a Maruti Versa?...I know its a car...(smart@sses, beat you to that one), you got any links so i can see what one looks like?

Oh, nevermind...finally found a pic after searching...It's like a mini van...with a strong emphasis on the word "MINI"...

Now I can see your concern with the AC...kinda like driving an escort (in the US) with the AC on...You'd be lucky to hit 60mph...going down hill...with a tailwind...in an escort with the ac on!

    Memnoch, man, you're good.

I'm still trying to figure out the kmpl to mpg!

now lets see, litre is smaller than a gallon, so multiply.... but miles are bigger than Kms....

10 km per litre = 25 miles per gallon (roughly)

thats pretty good here in the US. But im guessing Maruti versa is stickshift so you'd expect better fuel economy

Check out www.marutiversa.com to know more about this vehicle. It's basically a cute looking box with enough interior space to accomodate 8 people, and exteriors that can make its handling as smooth as a car.

In answer to the battery running the a/c...afaik you still need a compressor in the system to pump the freon around...which runs off of a belt connected to the motor. Unless they have electric compressors now. I have been out of the air conditioning business for a few years...

My supertanker does 50 gallons to the mile so stop complaining! And it's rusty. Holds 423 people though so there's loads of room for the kids stuff.

Get yourself one of these - it has built in AC provided by nature.
