    Need Help W/ Router

    I am on XP Professional. Whenever I hook up my computer & cable modem to my router, in the network settings 'Internet Connection' is disabled, and when I try to enable it, it says connected, but it still says the internet connection is disabled. Is it a virus or something?

    Try a diffrent NIC or if you dont have another one lying around take it out and boot up. then shutdown (assumes you did this b4 aswell. he he) then put it back in (Diff slot if possible).

    Note: do not open ur computer if you do not know what your are doing or if you have a warranty. Make sure you ground ur self and are careful.

    • Allways Include the Name and Line of the Exception (if one is occuring!)
    • If it is relevant state the version of Visual Studio/.Net Framwork you are using (2002/2003/2005)

    do u have any fire wall or security software installed...??? Like zone alarm or norton internet security...???

    Try to disable them and then connect...just give it a go, wont take long...

    I have found out with experience that I had to focre my NIC into 10MBps Full Duples to work. Windows says that its connected at 100MBps but for some reason I can access any network items (ie. Printer, Files, Internet) Try forcing the NIC, if not you m ay need to setup IP addresses unless DHCP is enabled.

    Give us some more details mate...

    What's your router? Make & model...
    What speed you running? 10mb 100mb 1000mb?
    What NIC's? Half-duplex Full duplex?

    Make sure your not manually assigning a MAC address to your NIC which controlles the internet connection.

    Are you sure the internet works fine w/out the router?

    Oh... wrack >>

    Firewall software & security software won't block DHCP assigned NIC's or modems, unless specifically asked to by the user, which obviously involves the static MAC address of the NIC. Not being funny... just thought i'de point it out

    If you need firewall software BTW... Sygate Personal Firewall Pro is THE best and most effective firewall i've ever used. Norton doesn't even come close!!! Stealth mode browsing is also a bonus, but it can cause viewing and source problems.

    Anyways...

    Make sure you re-boot your cable modem after changing any NIC setup, or release&renew via IPCONFIG, or IFdown ethx & IFup ethx on Linux (where x is the ethernet number).
