steam and 1.6 are still in beta.. i recommend not installing it because there is only a small handful of people running it now anyway... and you wont be able to connect to 1.5 servers...
you can still play 1.5 once its installed... I played 1.6 at my friends house... I find it SO MUCH better... and once the real version comes out, I only have a 1meg patch to install if I already have beta

well maybe take a look at www.counter-strike.net there is some message about the steam servers getting overloaded.. it is dated back a few weeks.., but perhaps they are still having problems
