Its supposed to give you an email when someone posts.
But there are some issues with that feature at present, and it is currently being looked at

If you subscribe to a forum, then it will be listed on your user cp page.

Sure but it doesn't do anything else. If you are subscribed to a thread you get email notifications of new posts until you unsubscribe. So you would think that if you subscribed to a forum that you would get notifications of all new threads (at least), but you don't.

Subscribing to a forum allows you to customize what you see in your user profile screen (user cp). This allows you to go straight to the user cp screen and see just the forums you are interested in (subscribed to) rather than all of the forums on the site.

The number of e-mails that would need to be mailed to subscribers of forums could quickly get unmanageable if they were sent to everyone subscribed to a forum. When a new thread or new post was made, it could result in thousands of e-mails needing to be sent. In primary forums, this could result in thousands of e-mails needing to be sent every few minutes.....

Sending e-mails as a part of the subscribe processes isn't a part of the general user functionality of the vBulletin software.

There are features in the software to do email notifications, but it is a moderator level feature that has more of the intent of keeping moderators "in the know" on what is happening in a forum so they can 'moderate' postings and threads.

Because there isn't a simple 'switch' to enable this as a feature for the general board users, it doesn't matter what the size of the forum is.

I've not looked at version 3.0 in enough detail to know if it is in the upgrade that will eventually be coming.
