Printer port question (electionics hobbiest question)

I would like to hook up an lcd to my printer port (eventually i'd like to get an ic that will allow me to use serial, but right now i'm stuck with printer)

is there anything i need to know about the printer port as far as power consumption is concerned? what type of resistors should i use?

might it be possible to power the lcd off of the printer port? (i.e. pin 18 (+5v) on the Centronix end)

I don't think I would try to power it from the port but you should be able to use the 5V signal to turn it on and off.
PC performance buffs have long measured hardware advances using a few simple metrics: Is it faster? Is it bigger? Does it have more blinky lights?
