Which came first?
Which came first, the compiler or the programming language?

Because one would have to start at machine-code to create something to turn stuff into machine-code - ie. a compiler.

You probably know the answer, but the first languages (including Basic) were interpreted, so languages came first.

Not bad Martin 
Lisp language was used. Lisp was usually hand coded into assembly or interpreted... Someone then decided to make a C compiler out of it, and the first language was born.
