    fix my cd burner

plz help me find a way to fix my cd burner.

When i put in a cd WR it reads it fine ready to burn. When i put in a dvd it reads fine (can read dvd's) but when i put in a normal cd w it speeds up, then slows down, then speeds up, then slows down, then speeds up, then slows down, then flashes a light and the status nays not ready. In my devices it has 1 unknowen device. I try to delete it and it comes back up

    things i have tried:

re-installing all the software (also deleting the hardware configs for it)

re-formating my computer (with system disk. this may get all the configs for cd rom devices loaded back on there anyway)

    -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
now i have resorted to asking you plz help me.

note: it worked at one stage

    Try the following:

1)Forcing a slice of processed cheese in the drawer
    2)Slam it shut
3)Submerge in Water just in case it overheats
4)Remove from water and dry in an oven, gas mark 7 for 15 mins

The results I am sure will impress.

    Dear King,
Is it still under warranty?? If it is, call the manufacturer and see if they will swap it out.

Try subbing in a known good CD or Hard Drive. If another unit works, there is a good chance that the CDRW is at fault.

I have repaired a floppy, but that was years ago, was damn difficult, and I do not recommend trying it!!! Unless you have the proper tools & documentation, it is impossible.

Does this problem occur only when writing, or will it read a CD?

Once in a while a bad disk comes thru. Try a disk from another package.

It may pay to check the bios settings. Make sure that they have not been corrupted.

I understand your frustration. My computer is on its 3rd CDRW in a year +1/2!!

    p.s

it will still read just not write.

what happens: you put the blank cd in (any brand cheap or good still the same) it speeds up then slows down. Then after about doing this 3 times it startes flashing a light at me. The drive status changes form getting ready to not ready (not ready being the state it is in when there is no cd in the drive)

out of luck 1 time in about 20 it will get ready (the light will stay on) then say 700 MG blank data disk.

this is really got me pissed of sorry for the confussion i have caused you
