    Problem with Windows 2000 Professional

    I have a box here, Windows 2000 Professional, P3-866 Mhz, 128MB RAM and a 20GB HDD.

    A couple problems:

    1) Desktop icons don't open at all: double click won't work, pressing enter won't work, and neither will right click-open.

    2) When I go to Start>Run... and type C: and press enter, instead of opening it, it asks me with which program I would like to open it with. I have to choose Internet Explorer here to actually get it started.

    3) After I can open up the drives, the folders don't open either... same as in #1: no double click, no enter, no right click-open.

    4) If I can open up an Explorer window, everything opens up alright.

    Help? Thanks.

You most likley have a virus. If you downloaded it, the ISO may of had a virus in it.

Too much trouble man. I'm sure this must have come up before, so I was wondering if there's a solution to this. My guess is that it IS a virus, but I'm trying to figure out which one. That would help me get some tool from symantec...

    Hmm...

Firstly, check your motherboard BIOS revision, make sure with your motherboard manufacture to see if they have released a FLASH file for the CMOS/EPROM.

Next, install Service Pack 3. Fixes some major security issues and may help.

Update / Install a decent Virus checker, like Norton AntiVirus 2003. It's only £25 now, so that could help.

You could have a SAM corruption, which will completely wreck your profiles. Try deleting the SAM's, and reboot. Make sure you backup all vital data from your profile FIRST, as data loss is possible.

If none of these items help, please feel free to give me a call.

As Siyan said, a reformat may be easier, but make sure you delete the NTFS/FAT partition, as some viruses can infect Sector 1 and your MBR, so run FDISK, select option 3, then option 4, as NTFS is classed as a none dos partition, and make sure you delete the correct one if you have 2 or more hard disks.

    Hope this helps.

    Regards,

    Paul.
