    Wireless PDA Applications

    Is this even possible? Is there a PDA or a PocketPC out there that I could use in the middle of a soccer field? I need to connect to a database about 40 miles away so is there some kind of receiver for this sort of thing, basically a trainer entering injury information. ? Obviously it doesn't have a 40 mile range. I mean, other than the Cingular crap that Palm offers. I'm just really clueless about how this wireless stuff works with handheld devices. Thanks

    You could always use Wireless 802.11, Xircom (ops I mean iNTEL) make a addon cards for the Palms.

    The only thing is that you will ned to have a access point some where.

    Stick an access point on the side of the pitch, or a few inbetween under the ground or something, and have a system on the sideline with access to the internet, which would connect you through to your DB

    It would need to be at different fields around the area, not just one. (nice job digging this one up, what is it, 3 months old? lol

    I use an 802.11b card on a Compaq iPaq and it gets about 150m range to the base station. Thus you could connect to the edge of the pitch - and if you have a stadium you could elevate the aerial?

    Have you done any programming on this? - I have an idea for a PDA based micropayments system but don't know anything about programming the wireless bits...

    Just use TCP/IP and then you can imlement any sort of system as though it was over a LAN

    Porting to XDA

    I've just finished working on a PocketPC 2002 project for Van Sales. Currently the technology is SQLServerCE which is uploaded via ActiveSync across a LAN but the next stage is to upgrade the Intermec terminals to XDA or equivalent using WebServices.

    The language at present is eVB but will move to .NET for the Server Side (assuming this place ever gets convinced their developers will stay after using .NET )....

    ok the new palm tungsten-w offers a built in mobile phone. You could probably find software to connect to your database through the phone line

    Just did a test on the strand and on completely open flat ground we got about 200 meters between the laptop and the hpJournada both using 802.11b therefore you could easily cover a football pitch with this.

    2 tin cans and a long piece of string may suffice.

    Just watch out for OS problems and high traffic volume.
