XML? What is it?

Hi

I have been searching for information about XML and I dont quite understand what it is. It is an extensible markup language but what is the point of creating your own tags? What features do these tags give to you? Does it replace HTML?

I created this but I dont know what to do with it :rolleyeys:

<person>
<version>3</version>
<age>12</age>
<name>Bart</name>
</person>
