Initial Web development issues
Good Evening All,
I am trying to find out solutions for webhosting a site for consumer review for product inventory which would include forms filled out from individual stores rating the product. I am have been asking around to try and find the best solution for this. Everyone have been pointing towards PHP/MySQL using Apache WebServer running on Linux OS. Is this the best affordable solution? If so, where is a good place to begin by learning all of this? Also, I am assuming that I would internet provider to host my site eventho I will probably have a local system that will of this. If I register for a domain, can I host the site of my system or would I need an Internet Provider? I know I am asking alot of questions initial, but I dont want to get sidetracked.
Thanks for all the help can provide in advance.
Sincerely,
Manoj

1. Nowadays, most of the solutions, such as Apache/Linux/PHP usually come at somewhat the same price as another solution such as IIS/WIn2k/asp. But PHP gives you more security and it needs not additional components for email for your clients.

About your site, you can buy the domain, then you MAY host it on your own machine if you've got a good enough internet connection, and plenty of uptime. You'll of course have to configure your machine to make it a web server for that purpose. Or you can go for some web hosts, who will charge you a fee. It depends upon how big your sit is... and how much traffic you expect. Some sites offer free hosting also you can signup there like brinkster.com for asp hosting but it doesnot allow you asp components to work with (eg CDONTS).

Why do you say this? Apache and PHP can be downloaded for free, as technically, can Linux (although it's a pain to do). Or you can get a distribution CD for like $70 US.
Windows 2000 is NOT free. Nor is it $70 US.

You can host your website on your system but you will need a internet connection and a lot of uptime(a lease line connection) and a server operating system like (windows 2000 server).
If you are from a developing country like india the net speed will be a problem. So i suggest you should host your site on some other servers.
