    XP Embedded

Anyone ever get XP Embedded working? It's driving me insane. I finally figured out how to boot off the compact flash, but now I get the black screen with a white progress bar and it freezes. Never makes it into windows.

Yeah. It's similar to Windows CE. We are creating a customized box, but we want XP's reliability along with it's ease of use compared to linux. Especially for our programmers. They are all certified in VB, and other MS languages, so we didn't want to hire a bunch of new people that are more into the linux programming scene.

XP embedded is basically just a componentized version of Windows XP Professional. It lets us choose what stuff we want and don't want in the OS, and to fully customize the GUI. The only problem is I can't get it to load past this stuipd progress bar. I've compiled the OS like 8 times in 2 days, each compile takes about an hour to build and compile, and so far no luck.

    Anyone else have any ideas?

Yes I know that Linux/GNU is way more reliable than XP, but it also doesn't have VB to program with. It's more reliable than 95, so that's a bonus. And as long as you don't have anyone who knows how to use a computer, XP is very reliable. It's only when people who know what they are doing try to get more out of it when it crashes... hehe. Exactly why I stick with 2000.

    Yes, and Yes.

You use all the drivers and stuff, but you can customize the interface, or not have one at all. It could be just a console server with no GUI and fit on a 64mb compact flash disk. I am currently trying to get it to work on a 128 CF disk, but I keep getting a BSOD at boot.

To fit it in a small amount of disk space. I'm running it right now on a PIII 500, so I am pretty sure it isn't just for pocketPCs.
