    Net Send

Some of you must be aware that it's possible to send messages using "Net Send" in a network.

    Code:
    net send 138.13.101.3 "You SUCK!"
Can it be used across the Internet?

Yes, and spammers have figured this out. Connect to the Internet with this running and not firewalled and you'll eventually get a spam ad thru it.

Interesting... I haven't heard many cases of this. So I'm correct when I assume both machines must be on the Internet, running Windows NT on it?

Pretty Much. I don't know if you can send the message from a *nix box with Samba or anything, probably someone has reverse engineered the protocol.

I think you can receive with it, don't know about sending. Most likely though, it uses the same NetBIOS protocol (SMB for Server Message Block, which is why they called it Samba).

Hmmm, I've tried using it over the net with a buddy, and it didn't work. Perhaps it can't get through routers either?

If it's TCP/IP it should route it unless someone's got theirs configured to prohibit those packets specifically.
