Connecting to the internet with Linux...

    Hey all

I have been having problems finding a internet service provider (ISP) so I can connect to the internet with my Linux Box. You know, AOL or Net Zero or something like that. I am looking for something free if possible.

    Any ideas?

I don't think you are gonna find any free services anymore... maybe dirt cheap, like PeoplePC. 12.95 a month. As long as you have a dial-up program, you can use it. In windows it just uses common Dial-Up Connections, so you can connect using Linux with a dialer.

I want to make sure I understand this...

Say I sign up with AOL and want to use my linux box to surf the net. Now, the AOL software will not install on linux, but I can still connect to AOL servers as long as I have a dial up number to feed the dialer to call AOLs servers and an account with AOL...

    Am I correct?

I have a nasty feeling about this. Last time I used AOL (*shudder*) it installed a load of crap in my networking configuration, and I couldn't connect to anything without the AOL program itself running.

Actually, a while back, I actually found a totally free, ad free, extra program thingy free ISP. You signed up, and they gave you a login, a password, and there was a list of numbers on the site. They, obviously, arent up anymore =).

AOL is a *****, and should be shot.

First of all, if you are using Linux, why even think about AOL? It is the worst piece of **** ever created. If you get a real ISP that just used pure dial-up, then you should be able to connect with any operating system. AOL acts as a proxy, and it doesn't work the way a normal ISP does. That's why you have to use their software to connect.

No no no no... thats not what I ment! AOL sucks! The only reason I mentioned it is for an example only. I would rather install a virus on my computer then that peice of junk!

I was thinking something like Netzero (which is what I use right now, it is an okay cheap service) but AOHell, no way!

Netzero is still only for windows. You need to get a service that doesn't use their own program to dial. Earthlink does that, I know for sure.
