newbie PHP help

hey all,
im new to PHP and i am trying to make a script that will check a directory for images, save the amount of images in the directory (ie. 6 files) into a variable and then create like an image gellery. i can do the image gallery bit as it is already completed but i have no idea how to go about finding images in the /upload directory and saving their names and stuff to be used in the gallery
