    More Linux Questions

I just got a CD for Mandrake 8.2. (Just one CD)

    1) Previously, I was using loadlin from the windows boot menu to get to Linux. After I install Mandrake, will loadlin work for this as well? Or do I need to find some other way to do this?

    2) Let's say all the 'programs' are being copied to the hard drive, during installation, and BOOM! The power goes out. Should I panic?

    3) Will Mandrake finally detect my network card?

    4) Do I choose Gnome or KDE?

    Thanks.

if you want to use linux the lilo or grub boot loader will take over automatically and detect your operating systems.

no, linux doesn't usually write the MBR till the end of the install. If something does happen and you have XP (and possibly 2000) there is a recovery console that you can go into and type fixmbr that will write you a brand spanking new MBR so linux is only another partition, then you can go into Pmagic and format the linux partitions and try again.

    I don't see why not

it is really your choice, personally i like KDE better (especially KDE 3 which unfortunately did not ship with mandrake 8.2 (may be with yours if it is a more recent one). Gnome is quite good too.

On KDE vs. GNOME: You don't have to use either. I wouldn't unless your machine has some power, as they both are quite bloated. There are lots of other window managers out there, check themes.org. They have a list below the blue search bar.
