Sleep mode not working
I purchased a new Vista machine about a month ago. Machine has been working fine. Yesterday I noticed it would not go into sleep mode. I've tried rebooting, but still I can't get the machine into sleep mode, it starts to, the screen goes black then the desktop reappears. Any suggestion?
thanks;
Wes

Re: Sleep mode not working
I've never used Vista so can't really help in that sense, however why do you need to put you PC into sleep mode? I've never liked that feature and usually turn it off the first chance I get.

Have a look at this and let me know if it resolves the issue:

Codefire,
Thanks for the reply, I unchecked all the settings listed in the post but no luck. It was good information, thanks for trying. Maybe I'll smear the mobo with valium.

Re: Sleep mode not working
it could be a program in your system tray. It could also be an extra-sensitive mouse.

My friend has vista on her laptop, and when she closes the monitor it goes into sleep mode. To get it out she moves the mouse. Try changing the mouse settings. (*LO)

Thanks for the reply,
There is nothing new in the system tray. I think it is some process running in the background because even when the screen stays dark the hard drive is being accessed every few seconds. Not much but it is being accessed. I checked for virus but found none.

Re: Sleep mode not working
i have the same issue with a clean xp install. It accesses the HD about once per second. Not sure why. I shut off every service i could find and it didn't matter. Still did it.

Re: Sleep mode not working
Well I'm getting use to using hibernate, it comes back on fairly quick and save energy so I can live with this problem. Thanks for the reply.

I don't think this is sleep mode. Most laptops have this setting, well at least for me on XP Pro anyways. Power Settings, after a few minutes of inactivity the monitor turns off. Sleep or Hibernate is a different thing.

Re: Sleep mode not working
sleep can be restored from a mouse move. All programs are still running. Sleep mode merely shuts off monitor, hard drive, powers down processor to a lower mhz (if allowed), and kills fans (if able). Your mouse and keyboard are both still powered. In fact, for that matter, your keyboard always has power to it, even when the computer is turned off. You can set keys in your bios on most systems that will let you return from hibernate mode using the keyboard. Some systems will even allow a mouse click to do it.
