    XYplorer goes twinBASIC

XYplorer is switching from VB6 to twinBASIC

XYplorer is a file manager for Windows. It features tabbed browsing, a powerful file search, a versatile preview, a highly customizable interface, an optional dual pane, and many unique ways to efficiently automate repetitive tasks. It’s fast, light and portable.

XYplorer is currently written in VB6 and is now being migrated into the twinBASIC programming language.

Here is the official announcement from XYplorer:

I'm happy to officially announce that XYplorer will switch from Visual Basic 6 to twinBASIC (https://twinbasic.com/) this year. The advantages are numerous and overwhelming. To name just a few:

    • XYplorer.exe will be a 64-bit executable with full support for 64-bit preview handlers, 64-bit thumbnail providers, 64-bit IFilters, 64-bit context menu, 64-bit codecs, 64-bit you name it (XY64.exe, XY64ctxmenu.exe, and XY64contents.exe are no longer needed).
    • Full multi-threading (XYcopy.exe is no longer needed).
    • Full Unicode support throughout the user interface, so all Unicode characters work always and everywhere, regardless of the OS system language (aka locale).
    • No more 100MB string memory limit.
    • Cross-platform support planned: Mac, Linux and Android.
    • XYplorer will be even faster than it already is thanks to a greatly improved compiler.
    • Note that all current licenses for the 32-bit version will be valid for the upcoming 64-bit version. Full continuity guaranteed.
    • Last but not least: Using a modern living language like twinBASIC will make development even faster and much easier. I can tell you: Writing this application in VB6 (dead since 1998) was a black art. I often felt like a voodoo programmer.

There's still a lot of work to be done, but I expect to see tangible results in the first half of 2025.

XYplorer migrates to the twinBASIC programming language

XYplorer announced (about migrating the commercial XYplorer File Manager app from VB6 to twinBASIC) on June 6th 2025:
I will release version 27.10.0000 as the final 32-bit VB release.
After that, there will be a couple of 32-bit TB versions, which will have bugs.
Once all the bugs have been fixed, we will move over to the 64-bit TB versions and never look back.

I hope to get all of this done within June.
    On June 13th they announced:
Here we go! About half a year after jupe informed me about something called "twinBASIC" I proudly present the first ever 64-bit version of XYplorer! Huge thanks to Wayne (author of twinBASIC) for making this possible, and to fafalone for his WinDevLib, which made the transition so easy and fast. It's nothing less than a dream come true!

New version of XYplorer (64-bit) compiled with
    twinBASIC BETA 803:

There will be glitches, there will be bugs. Work in progress.
    And on June 15th
New version of XYplorer (64-bit) compiled with twinBASIC BETA 805:

XYplorerTB.exe, v27.00.0706, NOT digitally signed, zipped

    ! Various fixes.

There will be glitches, there will be bugs. Work in progress.
