My cellphone has suddenly gone silent
I have a problem with my cellphone.
Since yesterday, when I call any number, I don't hear their voice, and they don't hear my voice.
The call connects successfully, but no voice from me to them or from them to me.
I tap on "Mute", and the problem continues: no voice.
Once again, I tap on "Mute", and the problem continues: no voice.
Several more times I tap on "Mute", and the problem continues: no voice.
After I disconnect, when I press the top or bottom of the left button on my cellphone to change the ring tone volume, each time I press it one notch up or one notch down, I hear the normal expected beep (or tone) that is very brief, just like before.
That beep sound is the only thing that I hear.
If somebody calls me, I don't hear the ring tone (even though it is not muted) but I see on the screen that they are calling, and I can pick up the phone. But then again there is no voice.
Is it possible that I may have inadvertently tapped on some commandbutton or anything to have caused this?
Text messaging works fine.
Please help.
Thanks.

Did you reboot the phone and or shut it off for a minutes?
Is it an iPhone or an Android?
Did the phone get dropped or get wet before this started?
Wi-fi went down for five minutes, so I had to talk to my family....They seem like nice people.

Or maybe it's one of those Microsoft-based cell-phones (Do they even still exist?)

"Microsoft is not making any new cell phones. The company has given up on the smartphone market and will stop supporting the existing Windows phones in the near future. Microsoft is focusing on other devices and services instead of competing with Android and iOS."

Re: My cellphone has suddenly gone silent
Ye the should have dump them 10 years ago when I was telling them to dump them (but they did not mail me back ) .
On the problem. I'm not cell expert but are we sure that the beep voice is the same speaker construction as the call voice?
Also what happens if you try to put headphones? Does it work? Send sound?

Best bet is to bring it in to some local techie/phone store and have them look at it.

If the OP could solve it themselves they wouldn't have created this thread.

Re: My cellphone has suddenly gone silent
Hi.
Thanks for all the comments.
After a couple of hours of struggling with this problem, I finally rebooted my cellphone, and suddenly the problem was gone.
But, I don't know why it happened in the first place.
I did NOT drop it.
It was NOT hurt in any way.
I just don't know why the problem happened in the first place.
I am afraid it might happen again.
To answer other questions, it is a Samsung cellphone that I bought in 2018:
Samsung Galaxy J1
SM-J120W
What should I do to make sure that this problem will not happen again?
Please advise.
Thanks.

Re: My cellphone has suddenly gone silent
You made it six years with this phone and this is the first time. I would spend another minute thinking about it happening again.
Now that you know the solution - you're always prepared.
Wi-fi went down for five minutes, so I had to talk to my family....They seem like nice people.

Re: My cellphone has suddenly gone silent
Rebooting solves many problems for phones, but those problems tend to be a bit bizarre, as this one was. Why worry about it?

Restart/shutdown your phone.

Re: My cellphone has suddenly gone silent
I'll argue that this will not work. You need to shutdown/restart not the opposite else you run into an issue that the phone might not open.

Re: My cellphone has suddenly gone silent
I would suggest that it wouldn't work because I'd restart, shutdown, then forget to start it up...at which point I DEFINITELY wouldn't be hearing anything from it.

Could it have been connected to a bluetooth device and pumping the audio/mic to that?

I'm sure OP really appreciates you taking the time to offer that solution after the problem was solved a day before you offered it. You must be the oracle of troubleshooting, which doesn't help after the storm has passed.
But hey, who am I to question the timing of genius? If there’s ever a next time (which, let's hope there won’t be), your restart advice will surely be the first thing we all think of.
Thanks, Grimoire!
