    Can't create new addin project

Was surprised to not get any search results for this...

I installed VB6 the way I always had, same version of VB6 on the same version of Win10 where previously addins were working fine; but this time, I can't create a new addin project. When I try, I get 'Class not registered. Looking for object with CLSID:{AC0714F6-3D04-11D1-AE7D-00A0C90F26F4}'. After clicking ok, Project Explorer says no open projects and is blank.

This CLSID appears to be associated with \Program Files (x86)\Common Files\DESIGNER\MSADDNDR.dll, and this file exists on my system along with a number of other files in that directory. regsvr32.exe in SysWOW64 from an admin prompt reported DllRegisterServer succeeded when I tried registering this DLL, but VB6 still gave the same error looking for the same CLSID.

I can open existing addins, but I get that same error if I double click on Connect.Dsr or try to compile. No references are marked as missing.

Re: Can't create new addin project

I wonder if that dll depends on some others which are failing to load?
    Running ide as admin?

Might take some time with ollydbg native debugger to root it out

    Running as admin yes.

Unfortunately I'm not that handy with debuggers... I could start it and look at a stack trace, but not knowing assembly can't pick out much from there

Re: Can't create new addin project

If you open the .vbp in Notepad, or another text editor, does the CLSID match what is in the registry?
    Please remember next time...elections matter!

Re: Can't create new addin project

@TysonLPrice -- does what match what? I do have a bunch of entries for the given CLSID in the registry, and keys for

    Computer\HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\MSAddnDr.AddInDesigner
    Computer\HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\MSAddnDr.AddInDesigner.1
    Computer\HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\MSAddnDr.AddInInstance
    Computer\HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\MSAddnDr.AddInInstance.1

@VanGoghGaming - I'm not sure it ever worked since I reinstalled Windows in January, this is the first time I tried. No reason to expect recent restore points would work; I do have a previously working Windows install on ice somewhere.

Re: Can't create new addin project

I only know the problem when I have installed an update for VS2022. After that, VB6 can no longer load add-ins or create add-in projects. But the problem does not always occur. But when it does, I run an Office repair via Programs and Features -> Office -> Change button. Then restart the PC and VB6 can load add-ins again and create add-in projects again. But I should also mention that I am still working with Office2010.

what version of MSADDNDR.dll do you have
    mine is 6.00.8169

    Is SP6 installed.

Also you are doing Twinbasic stuff with 64bit

just seen this and thought it might be something

Yes, the fist question is if you have SP6 installed.

Re: Can't create new addin project

Of course SP6 is installed; I think there's multiple SP6 versions tho... not such which one. File version is 6.0.81.0.

Yes I develop with twinBASIC on this PC but this is a pure VB6 question; strictly about making addin projects in the VB6 IDE. tB doesn't touch VB6 files.

    -Franky- Thanks I'll try that.

Re: Can't create new addin project

Someday we should run a registry and file system monitor while installing vb on a clean xp system and record every registry/file write, then same for sp6 so we can do arbitrary install/repair outside of the ms supplied installers which are now fussy

Seems like there was a paid product that did this but I never tried it

Re: Can't create new addin project

I had a similar problem when trying to reinstall AddIn MakeDLL from DanSoft:
    https://www.vbforums.com/showthread....akeDLL-problem
The Addin failed to load into VB6 with the log message: "Line 0: The file C:\VB98\Utility\DLL\addin\Connect.Dsr could not be loaded".

I never did figure out what the problem was, but fortunately I had a backup copy and there were a couple of other problems that I was able to work out.

So I hope that you have better success than I did. This issue is likely caused by some change in the Windows OS.

RE Connect.Dsr could not be loaded I have had this a few times. If i delete the on connection bit of code and recreate it. and also show the designer it works fine. after that

what files do you have in

    C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\designer

    MSADDNDR.dep
    MSADDNDR.dll
    MSADDNDR.tlb

could it be DEP interferring. the tlb not registered correctly

just a few things to try.

Re: Can't create new addin project

i started vb6 ide, opened a new project to get all base dlls loaded. then went to create a new addin project. I attached ollydbg and set it to break on new dlls loaded. started the new add in template. No new dlls were loaded. here are what look like the relevant vb dlls that were in the process.

    Code:
    Executable modules
Base Size Entry Name File version Path

I'd run Sysinternals procmon and see if it reports any errors when VB tries to read those registry keys.

Re: Can't create new addin project

I took a look in my registry. I have entries under HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Wow6432Node\CLSID\{AC0714F6-3D04-11D1-AE7D-00A0C90F26F4}, HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\WOW6432Node\CLSID\{AC0714F6-3D04-11D1-AE7D-00A0C90F26F4}, HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\WOW6432Node\Classes\CLSID\{AC0714F6-3D04-11D1-AE7D-00A0C90F26F4} But there are a few more entries here like HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\MSAddnDr.AddInDesigner, HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\MSAddnDr.AddInDesigner.1 etc. For me, the entry in the registry looks a little different than what has been shown so far. Specifically, the key HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Wow6432Node\CLSID\{AC0714F6-3D04-11D1-AE7D-00A0C90F26F4}\InprocServer32

I only occasionally have the problem that the IDE cannot load add-ins or create an add-in project. The problem started with VS2017, which I installed years ago, and when there was an update for the corresponding VS version. I haven't really investigated what exactly happens, why the add-ins can no longer be loaded, etc. Of course, I also tried re-registering the DLLs, etc., but that didn't work. So far I have always been able to resolve the problem with an Office2010 repair installation. I have now backed up the relevant registry entries and the relevant files from the path C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\designer in case I have the problem again. Maybe then I can figure out what is going wrong.

Re: Can't create new addin project

I discovered what was wrong with my own Connect.Dsr. When I examined the file recovered from the GitHub zip file, it showed 325 lines using the latest Notepad from Microsoft. However, when I recovered the file and displayed it with my own text editor, it showed only 11 lines with all the CrLfs missing or modified. When I edited the file and put the CrLfs back in place, the problem went away. None of the other 5 files exhibited that behaviour, and the old Notepad would not have hidden that deficiency.
