[RESOLVED] Current verdict on Windows 11

Hi,

I'm just wondering if it's worth switching to Windows 11 yet, have they fixed most of the bugs ?
I'm very disappointed with the version of Windows 10 (Windows 10 Home (x64) Version 2009 (build 19045.4355)) which came installed on a new laptop (ASUSTeK COMPUTER INC. VivoBook_ASUSLaptop X513EA_S513EA 1.0) and I'm hesitant to upgrade to Win.11 because of all the bad publicity associated with it.

I haven't heard of anyone saying that they're happy with Win.11.

I wonder if Win.12 is anywhere near being offered, and if so, will it too be full of disappointment ?

I've been running windows 11 since it came out and never really had any problems with it. I was annoyed that you couldn't drag things to the taskbar in the same way you could in Windows 10 but they fixed that ages ago.

Honestly have no problems with Windows 11, I suspect it is the usual case that people who are unhappy are vocal and get attention; people who have no problems just quietly use the product.

Have you ran the test to see "IF" you can upgrade?

My Dell that came with 10 can't be upgraded to 11.

Windows 11 absolutely trashes the UI. There's much more advertising, the taskbar and startmenu are absolute garbage-- even Windows 95 was better, Explorer's ribbon has been replaced with a whitespace covered toolbar with few options, the context menu has had most options moved to a secondary menu you have to click again to get, consumer versions make it difficult to use offline accounts... and for all these massive steps backwards and addition of spam and shovelware, you get... nothing. There's nothing Windows 11 has that you'd want besides artificial measures to drive its use like Windows 10 going out of support and games deliberately breaking compatibility because MS paid them to.

Windows 10 IoT Enterprise LTSC is better in every way, and it's still getting security updates through 2032. So I'd recommend using that and hoping they don't screw up Windows 12 even more.

I have no real issues with Windows 11. I hardly used the Start Menu anyway, so I've not had any issues with the Win11 implementation.

If you upgrade to Win11 you have to immediately turn off Bing search integration in Start menu to reduce lag and unresposiveness on finding and starting locally installed apps.

It’s doable and frankly there aren’t too many differences with Win10. Win32 API even reports current OS is Win10 so go figure.

They've done that before so that other systems don't stop working with a new OS because they think it's incompatible.

Thanks PD, I'm not really happy with everything yet but I'll have to get used to that, I've burned my bridges now anyway. Even in here (writing VBF post) I don't understand why, when I click 'Restore Auto-Saved Content' or just try to adjust the size of the 'post box', the caret immediately jumps to where I just finished typing (End), not at all helpful.

Ah... I can adjust the box size now that I'm in 'Preview Post'.

This time it's different.

Previously one could use executable manifest to signal which one is supported so that GetVersion API shim could return proper numbers.

There is no Win11 GUID for manifests so GetVersion API can never return Win11.

My biggest gripe is OneDrive. When you setup a new machine your basically forced to activate OneDrive. When I figured out how to turn it off, several apps, folders disappeared. It even messed up a PC I have in another room which isn't networked. It was a mess. OneDrive isn't new but they have really made an effort to force you to use it.

I felt that way about them forcing us to use Win.11.
I'm not too bothered about OneDrive, I do use it from time to time, although I had no problem turning it off. I've also turned off Edge, I prefer to use Google Chrome, another case, I feel, of 'em trying to force us to use their products.

If you ever can't work out how to do something as a user, use the Report Post tool to send a message to the mods, or else PM the mod for the forum directly. I have edited the thread title to correct the spelling but that doesn't affect the title of subsequent posts, which would all have to be edited separately. If you edit your first post, you can edit its title. I'm not sure whether that affects the thread title or not.

I just tested on one of my CodeBank threads and it appears that editing the title of post #1 does edit the title of the thread.

I've returned to my previous laptop, there was just too much hassel with the new one... And that Notepad in Win.11 is a total nightmare!

And it's nice to be back with, not just, the Win.10 that I know but also the VBF that works correctly as well.

Some of that's fair. I personally don't "hate" the simplified context menu but i wish it was customizable. I use rename constantly. I hated explorer's ribbon. There's reasons to update if you can. The window snapping and remembering of desktops is much better for example. I actually prefer the centered task bar but you can configure it. Many of the complaints you have are configurable although some require editing the registry.
