[RESOLVED] Win-10 v19042 (Updated on Tues) and M$ Word 97 Issues
Other than a Win-10 rollback hopefully there is a fix for the following:
Word97 uses doc Not docx extensions. If one loads Word and the file is listed in Words most recently used menu, then the file loads correctly into Word. However, if one selects the file name directly from Windows Explorer, the file does Not load and one gets a blank screen (no text), and the background color of that screen (in my case) is a medium to dark gray instead of Words normal (what I would describe as white or very like gray).
Anyone come across this and any suggestions to fix or have any idea what linkage may be broken? (I have reinstalled Word97, no luck)
==========
Notes:
==========
1) Tried creating new doc file using Word, saving to folder and then using Explorer (by both double clicking and using "Open With"). Blank screen as described above.
2) Did the same thing as #1, but assigned a "txt" extension, then used "Open With" from Explorer. File Opened into Word. SO appear doc extension is where the problem lies.

Did you install the additions to Word 97 that allowed loading .docx files?

Re: Win-10 v19042 (Updated on Tues) and M$ Word 97 Issues
jdc2000 (THANKS for responding):
1) If I recall correctly I had previously before Win-10 came out. Search of Microsoft didn't bring it up, or indicate if available anymore.
2) In my case just trying to open a "doc" file Not "docx". The fact Word comes up from Windows Explorer indicates to me that Explorer recognizes I want to load Word (since the file has a doc extension) -- BUT -- Word (because it was started from Explorer for whatever reason - registry setting?? - may be considering the file to be "docx" or something else), hence just the backgroud change. I've also noticed since this occurred, when using Word File/Open, that the file dialog -- which would place (put) the file name (with doc) into the text box when the file was selected -- but now does Not show the file name (with doc), in the textbox, but does load the file into Word.
I wish Microsoft would quit jacking with stuff as IMHO they are creating more problems then they're solving.

What about the "standard" template (normal.dot)?
Corrupted?

Zvoni: Recreated normal.dot and no luck. Personally don't think it has anything to do with issue. What I do think is that File Associations have been altered just for Word. However, in WIndows 10 so far I have not been able to alter Word File Associations. Research indicated this is BIG PROBLEM as Microsoft has again changed things. Here's a link to a firm selling software for that purpose. Cost ?

You should be able to change the .docx and file association in Windows 10. What happened whenyou tried?

See this link:

Look at the 77 replies.
This worked for me.
Goto:
1) Compability Tab
2) Select "change settings for all users" button
3) Uncheck "Run as administrator", if checked
4) Uncheck Compatibility Mode
I echo Microsoft has made things so complicated, that one spends more time troubleshooter than then do trying to get their work done. KISS method is the best.
