Resolved [RESOLVED] PopUp (???) Window -- Firefox -- Windows7 Pro

I've been receiving what I call popup windows lately.
For example, every time I go to homedepot I get a popup
window (which covers their search bar) that asks me to
register or do whatever. The only way I've found to get rid of it is:
select the end of the search bar, start typing something blindly, hit enter, and it goes away.

In Firefox I have both Request No Tracking and PopUP WIndows disabled.

Anyway to stop all these or some Firefox setting (property) I can enter into Firefox property list ??

If the popup is NOT from HomeDepot - I would scan for Malware.

    Thanks for responding.

Ran Microsoft msrt.exe and came up clean.
Hopefully msrt is just as current as malwarebytes.
Problem seemed to start with upgrade to Firefox 67.

I wouldn't trust microsoft to scan my PC even if it was the last anti malware on earth.
You should better try malwarebytes free
Also you should check 3 things:
1)That the is no setup application on Firefox add on's
2)That there isn't some software installed on your PC that may cause this (search Program and features on control panel. If you are on W10 search whenever the heck they putted this)
3)You startup page has not been changed to some other page (tools -- options --home)

Ran Malwarebytes and everything comes up clean.
Since I upgraded to Firefox 67 been a big issue.
FWIW running STRICT options.under Content Blocking.

Here's another example other than Home Depot that showed up this AM when searching for Firefox and Stop PopUps.

BTW: I am on destop, search just pulled up this website which happened to be for laptops.

That isn't a pop-up, that is a browser feature which allows sites to inform you when they have changed - but only if you choose to allow it for that particular site.

Further information (including how to avoid the question, and say automatically say no every time) is here:

    Per link:

    4. Check the box for Block new requests asking to allow notifications and then click Save Changes.
The problem is I have that notification option checked to block per above.

    =============================================
Whether they refer to it as a popup or notification, last night I got
one which indicated from Microsoft but in fact was some form of malware
and instructing me to call xxx-xxx-xxxx. Soft boot only thing seemed
to clear popup / notification. Ran malwarebytes after and system came up clean.

    =============================

Assume the following about:config controls the checkbox in the referenced quote above.

about:config to disable all. Entered: dom.webnotifications.enabled to change to FALSE.
Setting was still true even though checkbox (per above) was checked.
    Changed to False.

    Will post back on results.

Appears to have no effect. www.homedepot.com still requesting notification (popup) after exiting and restarting Firefox.
May not be the setting to checkbox block notification per above as checkbox remains checked.

    Re: PopUp (???) Window -- Firefox -- Windows7 Pro

The popups telling you that you have a computer problem and to call Microsoft at certain phone number are coming from third-party AdServers, which ALL host malware ads that you may see from time to time. As long as sites use those ad servers, the problem will continue.

    Anyway to beat em?

Tweaked a number of Firefox about:config settings with no luck.
Was in process of starting up Wireshark -- which I'm NOT proficient with -- and see if I could at least see where they originate. Whether I can block them at that point unknown.

Found shutting off JavaScript seems to solve the problem.
Appears notificatons and push have nothing to do with it in this instance.

Adblockers like uBlock, and NoScript would get most of them.

legitimate sites won't have them. Most sites that do are video hosts for piracy, and the programmers are good enough nowadays that they can either ignore the adblock or in the case of legit sites, they will give you an overlay telling you you can't view the site. New York Post is a fine example of the latter.

Personally, as a person that is part of a team tha tmanages a website, i recommend against firefox. We have plenty of code scattered all over our site that only exists to make the site look correct because of various firefox bugs. Edge works better usually, even if it is slower about half the time. The rest of the browsers are decent and the three top ones besides firefox all use the same chromium base.

If you are getting popups of the malware-like kind, but ONLY in firefox, check your plugins and disable them one at a time until you find the culprit. Shutting off javascript will not be a workable solution on many sites since they depend on it for ajax.

Here's the example I started with at Home Depot.
As you can see they cover up their search bar -- dumb!.
All toggles in Firefox 67 will not get rid of it. Disabling Javascript in about:config does.
The other one - which was / is some type of malware will not allow my system to make a snippet of it
and locks the system so Task Manager cannot be used. All checks for virus / malware after a reboot
indicated Not on my system. In this case toggling Javascript off stops it from popping up.

It's not malware at all, these are just the standard push notifications some sites use. Are you saying their instructions for disabling new requests don't work?

    Lord Orwell:
I have no plugins or AddOn for Firefox.

    topshot:

Are you saying their instructions for disabling new requests don't work?
YES, that is what I am saying -- at least for Firefox 67.0.0 on Windows 7 Pro SP1.

Try going to Home Depot site yourself with the Firefox suggested settings and see what you get -- Very interested in the result.

No popup notifications. 67.0.1, Win 7 Pro 64-bit

I did see that Location was a separate section under Permissions than Notifications so I also checked "Block new requests asking to access your location" before trying to access HD.

    Thanks a bunch.

Thanks, wasn't aware of the "location" setting and didn't make mental connection between HD popup and Firefox (32 bit) as a separate checkbox option.
Blocking location in 67.0.0 solved the HD popup on my system.
