NAIROBI, Kenya (Reuters) -- Nearly 100 people have died in Kenya after drinking a fatally contaminated illegal brew, and another 400 people are hospitalized, some suffering from blindness, Kenyan police said on Friday.

The consignment first hit the streets Tuesday, but despite widespread publicity about its dangers, police said some people were still buying and drinking the illicit concoction -- known locally as chang'aa.

"We are still sending word to those who may have drunk it to visit the nearest hospital facility," police spokesman Peter Kimanthi told Reuters.

"We are also trying to persuade people not to drink more -- but there are those who say they can't give up."

Nairobi's hospitals on Friday were crammed with patients, some lying two to a bed, sweating and writhing in pain, many of them unable to see.

Kimanthi said 12 women suspected of selling the deadly chang'aa had been arrested.

Most illegal drinking dens in Nairobi's slums are run by elderly widows who compete for customers with the intensity of their brew. At just ten shillings (15 cents) a glass, the drink sells for one sixth of the price of beer and is widely popular.

This batch of chang'aa is suspected to have been laced with methanol

FOR 15 cents a glass, I would have taken my chances. Well, maybe not. Keyan alcohol is not exactly renown throughout the world.
That stuff probaby tastes like Mad Dog 20 /20. Yuck!

Don't forget Cisco. That stuff is refered to as "Liquid Crack". I don't think that they even sell it anymore.

Some of the U.S.'s better liqours (NOT!) are described on this page:

Read the part about Wine Coolers and "Wine Foolers". I was right, Cisco was banned in the early 1990's. I remember seeing that stuff on the shelves in the mid-90's. (That's when I turned 21). I never actually tried it although I heard all of that stuff is NASTY!

According to the article JPRoy posted.

It was a wine cooler that was 20% alcohol by volume.

Enjoy the late-night chatting while you're young!

When I was younger, in 1982bc (that's before children) I would stay up all night and go to work without even going to bed. I can truly say I do miss it but it's been replaced by things (like children) that are more rewarding....but not always as much fun.

    Wink

Most faked alcohol beverages are doing adding ethanol bust sometimes methanol gets added by error. Ethanol is the natural alcohol of all alcoholic bevs.
Methanol is very similar in color, flavour, odor, but is highly venomous. It attacks central nervous system, bringind blindness and death.
