1. ## evaluating matrices help

hi there how would you go about evaluating a matrices? for example. evaluate A

A=

(-3)
(11)
(6)

i need to know this for my homework? it sounds simple but my book does not cover this. Any help would be great.

1. You'll need to explain what 'evaluate' means. For a square matrix, I could imagine that finding the determinant might be considered evaluating, but for a column matrix, I can't even guess what 'evaluate' means.

Looks to me as if evaluating |u| means describe the vector u ie it's magnitude and direction.

Here's an example of doing a 2d vector; the one you're describing is 3d  Reply With Quote

I think it means magnitude (like yrwyddfa said). For a 3D vector, magnitude is:

d = sqrt(x^2 + y^2 + z^2)

If this is homework, then I would expect there to be a book involved that explains these things. No?  Reply With Quote
