Happiness is a Linux box
I hate to be evangelical about things but I must confess to a new-found passion for coding now that I'm on Linux. There's a certain minimalist feel to it. Something very visceral and erotic about firing up vi and hacking out a terminal mode app without seeing a GUI all day.
I suspect that only a small minority will know what I mean but there you go.
Today is my 1 month Linux aniversary too. What does windows look like again?
I don't live here any more.

I have a Linux box too. But my Linux is pirated. You can download a free pirated copy here http://www.slackware.com/getslack/
Don't tell the mods about it as they will ban me.

Why are computers that run Linux called "boxes".
Why can't they still be called computers?

Re: Happiness is a Linux box
Because some of them are boxes. Linux can work on very low end computers, unlike Windows that eats Gigs of memory and CPU. It can work on so little resources that it can even work on a cardboard box.

If you add Gnome or KDE to your BOX, then it will start to scream for Windows again...My Ubuntu machine only smiles in Windows.. The GPU drivers are not even near as well written for LInux as for Windows. The core might be good in Linux, but no graphial bling bling on top of it can match what Windows have to offer...at least yet...

And regarding linux, well, you shouldnt expect to play games on it. And I'm not looking for the bling bling and graphical bullpoo that just uselessly eats memory.

I've heard the term box used for Windows boxes as well. Prolly cause the tower looks like a box or something like that.

I use Xfce on my old PII 'box', it's not bad. It's only a 20mb download vs 400mb for KDE.

Re: Happiness is a Linux box
Any PC is a "box". Its just a colloquial term for computer. In common usage:
Linux box, Unix box, DOS box, Windows box (although the only good ones are full of flowers), RISC box also.
Linux Firefox XBox Foxpro Box anyone?

Chuck Norris uses Linux. Linux must have a moustache.

...and hence I do not believe in moustaches either, despite my regular failure to shave.
My disbelief in those who use Linux is not, however, confined to Chuck Norris.

I think the moral is: Don't do kung-fu whilst holding a bucket of soapy water.
Or were you not talking about Bruce?
