[05] Client side interactive server controls
How is interactivity generally implemented in ASP.NET server controls? Are manual AJAX-style techniques used like in PHP or does ASP.NET have any built in methods to facilitate this?
Cheers, mmkay

Pena.DumbarseMode = On;
A Postback is a full page POST request isn't it?
AJAX is a request made in the background without refreshing the page.
What I'm looking for is, for example, to update data in a DB as elements of a control are being used. So without having to do a full postback. As far as I understand AutoPostback basically submits the form in say an onclick event. Is that right?
While it doesnt matter terribly much if the page is refreshed, I would like it if it could be avoided and bits of the page updated as needed while the control is being used.
Make sense?

Re: [05] Client side interactive server controls
I came across this page on the MS site earlier tonight and I think its interesting and similar to an AJAX technique of what your looking for I think.
http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/lib...08(VS.80).aspx
AutoPostBack = full Post, yes. You didnt post any specifics of what your trying to do.
AJAX is more client side scripting.

Re: [05] Client side interactive server controls
Unhandled exception of type System.Pena.DumbarseMode.WellAndTrulyStillOn;
How the heck do you get it to work?
I copied their RegisterClientScriptBlock code, but I see nothing on the client side. Needless to say, it does nothing.
Here are teh c0d
Code:
protected void Page_Load(object sender, EventArgs e)
{
ClientScriptManager cm = Page.ClientScript;
String cbReference = cm.GetCallbackEventReference(
this,
"arg",
"ReceiveServerData",
String.Empty
);
String callbackScript = "function CallServer(arg, context) { " + cbReference + "; }";
cm.RegisterClientScriptBlock(this.GetType(), "CallServer", callbackScript, true);
}
Also, their sample code is very , uh, strange.
Code:
public void RaiseCallbackEvent(String eventArgument)
{
return eventArgument + " new value";
}
Never before have I seen a void method return a value

Re: [05] Client side interactive server controls
In VS 2005 you have Atlas, which is the ASP.NET's AJAX framework.
You have the framework, tutorials and examples here: http://atlas.asp.net
