    Just run a Windows emulator.

linux... winux... unilinux... lindows... thats all just crazy talk

Even if you happen to install an emulator, and get it working... wouldnt you only be able to run that program from within the emulator? I think you're pretty much out of luck if youre talking about being able to compile a program written in VB6 to run on Unix.

Oh, of course. The program is a Windows app, so it needs Windows to run. Maybe some day MS will port VB (or whatever garbage they twist it into by then) to linux. And maybe Ms. Piggy will grow wings.

Oh, and Phoenix seems to include some form of crapware on Windows, don't bother with it.

Actually .net apps can be ported to Linux to some extent now, using the Mono framework

Yeah, okay, I'll throw out over 10 years of experience and quite a few gigs of library to get pretty color names and inherent dockability.

When I'm not required to actually produce working apps.

(That wasn't aimed at you, TPM, unless your first name is Bill and you dropped out of Harvard.)

Well IMO .net has a lot to offer and sooner or later you will have to upgrade (There was talk of not including the VB6 librarys in Vista). I can understand not totally jumping to .net, but I'd say totally ignoreing it is a bad idea. (No unfortunatly I'm not a trillionair )

Re: vb 6 in a unix envoirment ?

I doubt that they wouldn't talk about not including the VB6 libraries in Vista for the simple reason that VB6 apps use a runtime, that can easily be included with the program (maybe not that easily but it can be done). I think the reason that most people arn't using it right now is the whole thing were most Windows based computers don't have it installed (I would say its about 50-60% now, just pulling that out of the air so I could be wrong.), I say in about 2-3 years after vista comes out, thats when you will see a burst of applications that use .Net.

What I don't understand is why all OS's can't just get along and hold hands .

Except everyone's (except Bill Gates') wallet with reality.

BTW, TPM, I have plenty of .not experience - enough to know that anything I can do in VB.not I can do in VB6.

I'm sure you can, you could also do it with assembly. Both would take far longer though. Although at least assembly would be faster running...

Why try to pound a square peg into a round hole?

But yea, Windows emulator would work. Though I have no idea what business or personal use would VB6 on Unix serve.

He's just trying to prove he could get it working AFAIK.

Hmm, then a good challenge would be to convert VB source code into Unix compiled code on a Unix GUI. Though I don't know if thats even possible since some VB programs will call Window specific OS functions.

.net would take me far longer than VB6. I only have a few hundred k of library in .net so far.
