The Chit Chat forums are now an embarrassment...

It is with great sadness that I announce I'm not bothering with VBF CC anymore.

It's a joke in here. Recently these forums have been going steadily downhill, especially Chit Chat.

The maturity/intelligence/decency level of people on here has plummeted, and I no longer want any part of it.

I'm going to be retreating to the other forums, and if necessary I'll barricade myself in the Sentience threads to avoid the plankton that floats around in here. Should even that fail, I'll relocate.

It's sad, but that's the way it is.

John - what have you allowed to happen here...?

I sadly only pop in now and then these days, after a while off. It doesn't seem to be much different, other than there don't seem to be as many joke(r)s knocking about. Oh, and there's a bunch of people i don't know.

Part of the problem is that every-so-often you get an exodus to another forum. The regulars migrate, leaving one or two crackpots posting nonsense.

If the numbers came back to normal, it'd be the same old place.

I don't have a problem with the content here, just the availability. That's the only reason I headed for Galah - this place was always broken.

Unfortunately, most of the people who moved off aren't coming back very often.

I disagree.

I don't see chit chat as any more childish or immature, or full of crackpots as when
you guys were "in your prime." The only difference is that you had some sort
of connection with everyone, so when they told a stupid joke, you thought is was
funny. Now, that you don't know a handle, you think the same crap is not funny.

Yes, it's changed in that the connection is probalby gone, and probably gone for good,
it will never be the same, but all in all if it were the same, it wouldn't be
any good.

Personally, I don't see much difference other than a change of names.

oh, and a lot more scientologists.

Plus I think that many 'regulars' found their home in a forum (youknowwhichone) that was for once not aimed to be a spin-off of VBF and actually quite like it there. Can't be helped really. I sometimes pop in to see that it is virtually deserted in here.
And it used to be good fun. Now it's just not as interesting as it once was.
I really only have a problem with the spammers and some morons. And they are mostly on ignore

Ya, being down for the greater part of the month certainly didn't help this place.

but it'll pick up provided there isn't anymore server moves.
or updates,
or lightning storms,
or weevols in the wiring,
or they accidentally turn off the computers,

or it's Monday.

I'm usually on durning my workday, and there is usually a handful
of people hangin around.

I don't think it's down to the connectivity between people.

When I first started, I didn't know anyone - but there was a sense of community between people who were here.

There's none of that now. All there is is abuse, flaming, spamming, faking peoples user ID's to take the piss out of them, kiddies, religious nuts.

The only bit of community I saw here was a thread here by IanP about Gaffer - most everything else is people attacking other people.

Arbiter, you read my mind. I was about to post something almost exactly like this to FF last night. I have actually seen this trend before... On Battle.net. Couple of years ago, it was a great place to go and chat. Then it just slowly died. I think the whole problem could really be solved with a couple more moderators.

I have to agree, the whole situation is sad.

For a communtiy/forum to be effective, there needs to be more contributors as opposed to reactions to individual threads. As a lot of us are at work we don't often have time to create original threads. As the number of (positive) contributors dwindles, so the forum becomes more bare and banal.

Its a shame as I enjoyed many of the threads on this board (Diplomacy etc). Its all a bit cack now.

True, it's not VB related, but the forums here still manage to provide that service for the time being.

I'm leaving chit chat when this thread dies and moving over to DF's place for the community feel. As far as I'm concerned, this place has ceased to be somewhere with an atmosphere and is now merely a resource.
