    Re: IE7 download weirdness

Well it's not an IE7 issue as I can start that download ok running IE7 also.

I'd take a look at your security and advanced settings in the Internet Options beneath the tools menu.

Possibly the cookies setting I've got set to "accept all cookies" (though not for long now I've spotted that). All other settings should be the default and I've just clicked to restore the normal and advanced settings also.

Can you get to the site (not that file) ok? can you ping this - I get an address of 87.106.191.9 for that site here.

Changing the cookies setting makes no difference and yup can navigate to all other pages on the site (I'm a programmer for the company that owns the website btw)
I've looked at the settings on the web server too but cant see anything that would result in being able to download the file using one browser but not with another. Even stranger that you can download it using IE on your machine. I've tested it using a machine thats on a different ISP now as well, and that got the same error message

    Re: IE7 download weirdness

Wouldn't play with the web server at all as I can access this externally fine. This could point to a block, redirection or setting from your computer or network.

Can you run a ping durell.co.uk and does this come back with the IP address listed above? Can you download files from other sites ok? Can you download zip files from other sites ok?

Edit & update: have just asked someone else to try this from a different ISP in the UK/different country to me to prove this site works. I'm afraid its something to do with your network or pcs there.

    Re: IE7 download weirdness

pinging works fine, and i havent seen any problems downloading other zip files before

so it worked ok for the guy u asked in the uk? I've tried it from my home pc which is on a different network & ISP and that didnt work either, the only link between the systems is me!! maybe im cursed... seriously though this is quite frustrating, and google is being of no help at all. Have you (or anyone else reading) ever experienced this error before?

    Re: IE7 download weirdness

Arachnid13 - The downloading of the .zip file blatantly points out the inadequacies of your cars interior, and in fact has nothing to do with the internet, or Internet Explorer.
alex_read – I’m the web designer for Durell (the site in question) and me and Arachnid13 need to resolve this problem ASAP to help a client. We’ve tried using IE7 on numerous machines, and on numerous networks, to no avail. As far as we’re aware there is no blocking, redirecting or settings on our network (or the other networks on which we have tried this) which would prevent the downloading of .zip files, and we can download .zip files from any other site, apart from our own. Leading us to believe that there is a problem with the configuration on our web server which prevents IE7 from downloading .zip files from it. It’s strange. Very very strange.

    Re: IE7 download weirdness

Hi guys, can you answer the following please. If there's still no hints emerging, I'll just do a dump of my IE7 settings so you can try setting yours the same

    1) I've had this tested on IE 6 and IE 7 now which both work fine here. If it is an IE specific issue, then it will be a setting and not browser version. Are you able to access this fine not only through firefox but IE6 then or have you not tested with IE6 there (I wondered why you named this thread specifically in relation to the 7 version of IE).

    2) I just can't think of any web server settings which would affect this really. When you are trying this, are you on the same network(s)? I know you mention the use of different ISPs, but are you connected via VPN, terminal services or anything like that?

    3) Have you reset your IE7 installs to the factory settings and got the same behaviour?

    Re: IE7 download weirdness

1 - I dont have access to any machines with IE6 installed so I cant check this

2 - I do occasionally connect to VPNs in order to connect to our client's networks, and I was earlier today but there's no difference with or without the VPN. 3 of the machines ive tried it on are on the same network, but my home pc is obviously seperate.

3 - Factory reset made no difference

I'm leaving work shortly so hopefully a new day will bring with it some answers

alex, how could this have anything to do with our IE7 settings OR our network settings if we can download zip files from any other site perfectly? (Using IE7)

It's very strange, but it has to have something to do with our webserver, which is even stranger as you can download the file perfectly.

What kind of firewall do you use?
Delete it. They just clutter threads anyway.

Windows firewall on my computer and the router's firewall are both active, surely if it was the firewall it would stop downloads from both firefox and ie, also as the downloads are http traffic wouldnt I have problem browsing sites if it was the firewall?
Could it be firefox and ie7 clashing somehow? has anyone who's got it working with ie got firefox installed?

It's not fire fox causing the problem because it still happens even if you uninstall Fire fox.

    Edit:

It is not the fire wall either! I havd Windows Firewall disabled and uninstalled my other firewall and the file still doesn't download.

are you running off a domain? Your domain server can be set to block zip downloads but firefox uses its own internet settings, not the same ones IE uses.

i can't download it either. I don't have ie6 to test it with.

the main point of my domain question was:

Do you connect directly to the internet or do you connect through another computer?

Wow sorry about the late reply, been busy with other things but this is still an issue

Both at home and at work I connect through a router, no ICS or other complications. The web server is not linked to our internet access in any way, it's hosted by a third party in an entirely seperate location.

I confirm that I get the error in IE7 but not in Firefox 3. This is under Windows Vista.

i don't know if it's some kind of issue introduced with a recent patch, but i am suddenly unable to download ANYTHING in IE by clicking on the link. I have to right-click and save as...

However it works perfectly well in IE8.
