Vista - My experience! Kind-of like a blog!
Vista is very weird!!
I installed it and yes!!! Great, I have the latest M$ OS
So I installed all of my drivers and even better, I have Vista and it fully works! Now I move onto programs, WinRAR, Fine, Firefox, Fine, MSN Messenger, No sound, but it gets annoying anyway so Fine!
So far so good Vista's going great!!
Now comes the problems, I install Visual Studio 6.0, problem is, It shows up in the setup as NT 4.0 WITHOUT SP3, so what does the setup do but try to install SP3, of which wont because it knows that it's updated, anyway, I go along with it and of course it doesn't install because of the stated reason ! The setup restarts saying try again or it cannot be installed etc. etc. etc.!
I quit the setup and be sneaky, I go to the Setup properties and run it with Compatibility for XP, it works on that
The setup process goes fine, all files copied, then, whilst updating the system, all of the DLLs cannot be placed in the registry
Regardless, I thought nothing of it and went straight into VB 6.0 Hey, it loads fine.... WOOHOO!!! So i test all of the controls, yes, they all create perfectly! So I try to open my MAGEIM project then comes problems it says it can't find ieframe.dll in the System32 directory, I investigated and there it was, blatently lying there in front of me! I got confused at this time and went back into VB components! I found the Internet Controls and there it was, ieframe.dll, the path wasn't in the right case (Which shouldn't make a difference ), then I click browse and picked out the ieframe.dll myself! Select to include internet controls, click ok!
'Cannot find D:/WINDOWS/System32/ieframe.dll\1''
What's with the \1' I think, yet again regardless, I try many more times to manually select the file! NOTHING !!
I tried to change the compatibilty settings back and still the same..... SP3!!
I have a trick up mysleeve
I would go to the setup config. and alter the path to the SP, maybe create an error and fool the system
But no, Setup cannot find file, bla bla bla, locate it yourself ! I'm starting to get REALLY angry now!
STILL TO COME! THe after 7pm experience! None of this was made up and/or faked! This is my real experience!
I'm going to try compatilbility with NT4.0 (With SP6 installed)!
Wish me luck
Rudi

Re: Vista - My experience! Kind-of like a blog!
How do you have a version of VS 6 that already has SP6 on it? Maybe you could choose not to install it when you are installing VS?

Are you running Vista as your main OS or under Virtual PC?

I'm running it on a dual OS, and have not seen the problems Rudi has experienced..
Left it on the internet for hours (searching for driver updates.. ), and it never rebooted once

I believe it was released under Windows Vista.
And I wouldn't expect Visual Studio to run at all on Vista, so don't complain. Its not a super backwards compatible OS.

It is Windows Vista. The codename is Longhorn. There is 1 year and 3 months before the official release of the new Windows... lots of things should be done

Re: Vista - My experience! Kind-of like a blog!
Last night this guy told me that VB6 appsa as well as DOS are going to be supported in Vista. I told him there is a slight chance of VB6, but little chance of DOS. Can one of you guys try running his DOS program to tell me if it works?

A lot of people are still using DOS. They are screaming, and M$ is including support for it in VISTA, apparently.
