    Re: Post Race!

Wow, no idea things were that rough. Didn't pay attention to news for a few days, TV or radio. I have WeatherNation on monitor 2 now via Pluto TV channel 217.

    Couldn't find their own direct...

Re: Corona virus, China major city lockdowns, etc.

Went out today into our new maskless world, made a quick stop at a convenience store. Everyone else was wearing masks, making me feel like an idiot for leaving mine on the car seat. Then took a...
  3. Re: Run-time Error "3420" : Object Invalid OR No Longer Set

Sure looks like an Access VBA exception, though I suppose it might be some DAO error. Those are poorly documented, DAO being incredibly obsolete.

I doubt it is any kind of normal collection...

Re: What song are you listening to right now?

Stuff I listen to is probably "old folks'" music to most of you. Usually it has some casual connection to an event or times in my life. This just came up on my playlist:

Re: Corona virus, China major city lockdowns, etc.

Yeah, we're living in strange times. Times where claiming to have been abducted by aliens, probed, and harvested for DNA looks like a mundane boast about one's special identity rather than the cry...
  6. Re: Change “Open For Binary Access” with Private Types to something with Unicode supp

Well, I'm not saying "do it this way" but "you can do it this way."

It is hard to imagine any need for normal programmers. It seems to be an issue for low-ball outsourcing coders than anyone...
  7. Re: Show Select Unicode File by GetOpenFileNameW,comdlg32.dll

    What was the question?
  8. Re: Change “Open For Binary Access” with Private Types to something with Unicode supp

    Well, it was. Sort of.

I'm pretty sure the issue was "I can't hack up any way to Get/Put UDTs properly to a file named using other-alphabet characters."

That's because there is no obvious low...
  9. Re: Change “Open For Binary Access” with Private Types to something with Unicode supp

    No, not really.

You only get transcoding to (and back from) ANSI when you use Declare and pass parameters As String (which is really dumb).

As far as I can tell TextOutA(), DrawTextA(),...
  10. Re: Change “Open For Binary Access” with Private Types to something with Unicode supp

I already said way back in post #12 that it has problems. We also covered some of the problems in the thread linked to in post #36.

So yes, this is not a general solution to the problems of...

See more discussion in thread https://www.vbforums.com/showthread.php?881537-FYI-UTF-8-Manifest-on-Win10-1903-or-better

This was also in Windows 10 as early as 1803, but there it was a beta...
  12. Re: Change “Open For Binary Access” with Private Types to something with Unicode supp

What the change does is modify the operation of xxxxA system entrypoints. It has nothing to do with xxxxW ones.
  13. Re: Change “Open For Binary Access” with Private Types to something with Unicode supp

No, where it uses the APIs there is no problem.

I think the problems are in the VB6 runtime, OCXs, and in OLE, which have not been "fixed" to handle this new process attribute. Er, well, 3 year...
  14. Re: Change “Open For Binary Access” with Private Types to something with Unicode supp

    Yes.

What it does is cause the process' "default codepage" to be UTF-8, so any system APIs used to convert to/from ANSI will consider "ANSI" to now be UTF-8.

Caution though, there are issues. ...

It's ok. I can see that VB6 is about as dead now as it is going to get anyway.

  18. Re: Change “Open For Binary Access” with Private Types to something with Unicode supp

Using the same manifest and these alterations Unicode file names work:

    Option Explicit

    Private Type MyUDT
    B1 As Byte
    S As String
    B2 As Byte
    End Type
  19. Re: Change “Open For Binary Access” with Private Types to something with Unicode supp

I sure did. Early on I read the question correctly, but then a few days later I somehow went off on a tangent with contents rather than file name. Oops!

    Out of space for uploads

The labor shortage thing just gets more real here. A drugstore close to me has closed, moved staff to the one a little further out. Reduced pharmacy staffing hours within the store.

  30. Re: Change “Open For Binary Access” with Private Types to something with Unicode supp

It should be obvious, but the manifest is only effective in the compiled EXE, not IDE runs. I cringe at the thought of setting this feature "on" for the IDE itself.
