Re: Windows 11 is available to some now
Just hit me that I also have my old 386 at the warehouse below but I'm really not in the mood to get it here and see if it works but I have a it's 99 SONY LCD 14' left to my regular monitor that works. It's not plugged in to something but it works if needed.

Yeah, if you put a something in storage it will extend it's life span, except humans. lol
I was referring to actively using the same device, my guess is you've moved on to a DVD/Blue Ray player. Maybe not, now a days streaming is probably the main way people watch movies. Though I do see a lot of people using Red Box. I haven't used my DVD player in years.

Then SONY wins again. I'm not sure how old it is but I had it before this house and that is sixteen years. I really don't know exactly how old it is. It is a SONY MEGA BASS Walkman. I just tried it and at least the FM/AM works. I don't have a cassette tape handy to try one :p
I guess even that fits into the storage extending the life though. It has been a while since I turned it on.
Re: Windows 11 is available to some now
Ahh, the good ol' times when SONY actually made stuff that lasted more than their warranty.
Ah, I also have a Marantz amplifier that is 20 years old and works like a charm. I mean nothing else work in the stereo set except the speakers (Tannoy rulez) and good ol' Marantz PM-80 mkII.
...If you are counting electric guitars as electric I have a Gibson here...But that thing will only die if I Who-smash it down on a concert or something.

That's the problem in electronics, these days: It's not so much that things stop working, it's that better things come along. Your 386 probably does work, but why bother? A VHS player probably still works...but why bother?
When I think about electronics in my house that are over 15 years old, I think the fridge, the dishwasher, the stove, and my stereo (which I bought back around 1993) are the only items. In all of those cases, it isn't clear that what is on the market these days is in any way better than what I already have. There are quieter dishwashers, but I don't care. There are cooler looking stoves, and I've considered changing, but I don't really care. I did look at new refrigerators, because there are some advantages to them (I've always wanted a crushed ice dispenser), but all modern refrigerators are built to the same height, while older ones are slightly shorter. As it turns out, my house was designed for the shorter size. I can't replace the fridge with a newer model without also removing some cabinets that I use.
For everything else, they tended not to be replaced when they wore out, but when I upgraded functionality. Why build a computer that can last twenty years when people will be able to replace them with better ones in less time than that? Improvements have slowed, but not stopped. When they stop, we can talk longevity. Till then, what's the point?
Re: Windows 11 is available to some now
There is another point here.
Back in the days, they made product that lasted, nowadays they will make the products to last as low as they can so they will be replaced to get new ones. That will not go for everything. P.E. speakers or guitars etc but will certainly go for PC, laptops, fridge (our new fridge lasted for 5 years), stoves , cars , condo...No nop, no...Condo..rs . It won't be my turf but I guess they also swap languages faster and deprecate others (yeah don't VB6 they subject here,OK). You can also extend it to human relationships, back then your parents where married for 50 years, now you got 3 divorces and 10 kids and no I'm not talking from personal experience :p
Re: Windows 11 is available to some now
Your parents were married for 50 years because women weren't allowed to make money, couldn't own property, and so forth, not because they didn't have problems. It wasn't better.
If we are going to swap out our computers for a better one in five years, then why make a computer that will last for much longer? Still, the one piece of computers that has always worn out, and which still always wears out, is the mass storage device. I don't believe there is any 'built-in' failure for hard drives. They have long been advertised for MTBF. In other words, there were only two things that I remember them being sold for: Size, and reliability, of which the latter always kind of sucked. I'm not sure there was ever the possibility to make those last for far longer than they did. I think that, if somebody was capable of making a more reliable HD, it would have been done.
Re: Windows 11 is available to some now
If we are talking about my parents then you are dead wrong if we are talking in general, I believe there where other more strict ethics back then.
It's mean time , mean time. If we are talking about regularly used HD drives, I never had one fail me if it hadn't shown some problems in the first year and let's not forget the original, probably best of all for home usage, Quantum Fireball Hard disks. There is still one in my XP machine working just fine. If we are talking about server racks then you are correct as there is a lot of abuse over there but that is what RAID is for. And it's not that hard disks will just die in a year. Even if you are running it like mad as we do in some of our servers 24/7 they are still don't give up that easily. Size , reliability AND RPM but how much more can you spin, you will puke.

Yeah but who's ethics? The Taliban men have strict ethics. They probably have a pretty low divorce rate.

That's sort of the point, how many of the pc's in use are old XP machines, < 1%. So what's the point of a HD lasting 15yrs. Everyone has moved on.
Re: Windows 11 is available to some now
Those Mean Time Between Failure (MTBF) rates were generally pretty high, but those are operating averages, so they don't count the time that the computer is off. For the average home user, 50,000 hours is a LONG time. I never had one fail in one of my personal computers. I did have one fail at work, while living in the Florida Keys, but the electricity down there is so spotty, sppiky, and unreliable that you had to have a UPS system or you were likely to fry a computer pretty quickly...and that's what happened to the computer that was fried at work. It got plugged into the wall, and a spike came through and wrecked the motherboard and the HD.
Re: Windows 11 is available to some now
So you are not using a secure multi plug for your PC? That is the first thing you do, you just don't use the main plug.
Also if you want to know the XP usage is close to 1,5% so it's very close to 2,5% of Linux. Of course I do not recommend XP but I do use them. Firefox runs 3 times faster than my w7 PC and I can use older software there. Of course I'm a live security risk....NOT, since no one will bother to hack XP now. :p
Re: Windows 11 is available to some now
That wouldn't have been enough in the Keys, unless you didn't mind spontaneously rebooting a few times a day. You needed a UPS...and I wasn't around when the computer was fried.
Re: Windows 11 is available to some now
Bah! I was expecting an apology for improper use of hardware and I get this, this, this excuses?! :D
Re: Windows 11 is available to some now
Re: Windows 11 is available to some now
I'm going to try to install it on my toaster. Now THAT hardware is unsupported.
Re: Windows 11 is available to some now
Lol.
I opened my laptop , had not done for a month as I was in Athens and I did not needed it and Sazam! a windows update to install w11. Not mentioning beta not mentioning anything (that reminds me of the 3rd dose of covid  ). At least on my w7 I'm left in peace (I'm blocking everything from MS since the support ended anyhow and only manually choose if I need anything as this is my main PC).
P.S. I don't see a reason to install W11 on unsupported hardware let alone install it a this stage. I think it's safer to stay on a test w10 for now than experiment. But, you know...
Re: Windows 11 is available to some now
I'm not sure if Windows 10 will work on my old machine, but I'm gonna give it a try after I test a temporary virtual machine with Windows 7 first.

Apparently you are not keeping up with technology...

Re: Windows 11 is available to some now
To be perfectly honest, I don't even HAVE a toaster. I do have a toaster oven, but it's not the smartest.
Re: Windows 11 is available to some now
Some w11 tips.
https://www.pcmag.com/how-to/customi...-11-start-menu
There is a start button option for left align. Duh. Someone smoked too much weed and came to his senses afterwards but it was too late...
Re: Windows 11 is available to some now
I just caught a word here from one of the admins that it is rumored that MS will push w12 very fast as the behavior of w11 looks like vista or w8.
I won't say that with certainty because it's not our top admin that I trust 99% but usually he also knows what he is talking about.
