Forum broken? & 503-504 ERRORS
I'm experiencing something weird.
When i want to post a reply or Edit one of my own replies, i'm getting a "403 - Forbidden"?!?!?!
Can someone confirm?
EDIT: OK, some insight.
I'm getting 403 - Forbidden, when trying to post "any" form of code?!?!?!
In this case it was a snippet (!) of SQL
-
Re: Forum broken?
I posted a snippet wrapped in CODE tags and it worked fine.
Give it another try when you get a chance. Perhaps it was a temporary thing.
-
Re: Forum broken?
Where are you posting?
Did you try here in Feedback?

In Database.
Just did a take with Code-Tags HERE, and it didn't take (403-Forbidden)
EDIT: Just tried multiple times.
It's not the Code-Tags. it doesn't matter if it's Code-Tags or Quote-Tags
It just doesn't want to take the SQL-Snippet
Another Test:
WHERE ID=5
EDIT: Works
WHERE CN LIKE 'MyName'
EDIT: Works, too.
What it rejects is anything with Quotes followed by ampersand
See syntax here in first post
https://www.vbforums.com/showthread....r&goto=newpost
EDIT:
I think to remember having similiar trouble some months ago when the forum was acting up in a similiar fashion
-
Re: Forum broken?
I updated the closed service ticket with the IT guys.
We are behind a new firewall that is causing the error.

Re: [RESOLVED] Forum broken?
I've seen that same error to. It's too random to warrant any action at this time.
-
Re: [RESOLVED] Forum broken?
Massive lag, timeouts, and errors off and on all morning so far.

I see that...occasionally, but too infrequently to see any pattern.
I got three different errors when I tried to post this. One was the 503 first byte one, followed by a 504 bad gateway, then another 503.
-
Re: [RESOLVED] Forum broken?
504 Gateway Time-out
Too much lag when the site does load.

Re: Forum broken? & 503-504 ERRORS
I will be creating a service ticket in a few minutes.... If I'm not mistaken, these errors show up on a LOG at the Servers...
This has pretty much been the tell tale sign of trouble:
VBForum
There are currently 33,420 users online. 9 members and 33,411 guests
Most users ever online was 62,681, Jan 17th, 2025 at 03:30 AM.
Under 1,000 would be more the norm.
7 out of 11 sites have the high users online numbers.
-
Re: Forum broken? & 503-504 ERRORS
Confirmed.
504 - Gateway Time-out as of a few minutes ago
-
Re: Forum broken? & 503-504 ERRORS
I've had multiple 504 errors for most of the day (including when first trying to post this message!). Also on other related sites (eg codeguru).
-
Re: Forum broken? & 503-504 ERRORS
We should set up a webcam link so that the mods can see us when we post, a smile, a quick wave and go...
-
Re: Forum broken? & 503-504 ERRORS
If you google the error messages you quickly get the impression that they are server related.... So everyone is seeing the same errors.
-
Re: Forum broken? & 503-504 ERRORS
Still getting 504 - Gateway Time-out
-
Re: Forum broken? & 503-504 ERRORS
still getting

Re: Forum broken? & 503-504 ERRORS
Still getting 504 Gateway Time-out errors
Large number (38,972) of users online.
Over 800 users in VB.NET forum
Over 800 users in VB6 forum
Over 700 users in twinBASIC forum
Very slow.
Almost unusable.

I have quite a few issues with the timeout. Sucks the fun out of it not knowing if I just wasting my time or not.

Re: Forum broken? & 503-504 ERRORS
Repeat after me-> "It sucks to be Steve"
I updated the service request ticket pleading for assistance..... Short version of the reply->
"Rest assured, it’s one of my priorities to get these sites stable again!"

Re: Forum broken? & 503-504 ERRORS
Yep, whatever the problem is that started a few weeks ago, it's still there.
I'm getting 503 & 504 errors probably 50% of the time, or more on VBForums, and have been over the last few weeks.
I just keep pounding on "refresh" and eventually get through, but it's quite annoying, and worrisome.
The 503 errors come when I attempt to make a new post. The 504 errors just come when I'm trying to read and navigate around in the forums.
I take it back. It's more like 80% of the time. I had a devil of a time just getting this post posted.
Ohhh, just FYI, I've got a top-notch computer and my speed test pegs in at ~1Gb, so I don't think that's the problem.
-
Re: Forum broken? & 503-504 ERRORS
Just keep an eye on the number of online users. At the moment, it's over 38,000...and I'm only one of them. When the numbers are that high, these problems seem to happen. They aren't real, though.
-
Re: Forum broken? & 503-504 ERRORS
1:53 pm...
I've just visited a few sister sites...did several actions - Have NOT seen any errors.
I am having a new issue.... Part of the system won't let me log in.... Yet here I am making a post.
-
Re: Forum broken? & 503-504 ERRORS
OK..... I killed my cookie for this site..... When I logged back in - it stayed logged in...
I still haven't seen any 503 - 504 ERRORS.

Had login problems too. Also, a couple of other weird things. But the site does seem to be performing better. Still notice there are 26k users.

From the IT Guys-> "we set a one hour caching rule a little earlier today at our CDN just for VBForums that should have only affected a few top search bots, yet we just removed that rule to see if that helps clear up the issue you were having."
-
Re: Forum broken? & 503-504 ERRORS
Seems to be fine at this posting...
-
Re: Forum broken? & 503-504 ERRORS
It's been fast for me all day, no issues.
-
Re: Forum broken? & 503-504 ERRORS
As of right now: Fast and furious
-
Re: Forum broken? & 503-504 ERRORS
I just finished my morning rounds.... aka I visit all eleven sites.... I started off great and then ran into 6 or 7 sites with the same two errors.... Will see how it goes...
-
Re: Forum broken? & 503-504 ERRORS
504 is back as of a few minuts ago

Re: Forum broken? & 503-504 ERRORS
~30,000 users online again. If it's AI bots, then as a first measure the site should try asking them nicely to go away in the robots.txt file. Right now vbforums.com has no robots.txt file.
Admins, if you are out there, here's a decent place to start: https://robotstxt.com/ai
-
Re: Forum broken? & 503-504 ERRORS
I haven't gotten any errors in the last 30 minutes or so.

It is unbelievable that the forum doesn't have a robots.txt file. That's one of the very basic things that any webmaster knows (even amateurs).

It surprised me too. I expected to see an old robots.txt file without any of the new AI bots listed, not a 404 Not Found error.
-
Re: Forum broken? & 503-504 ERRORS
I checked four of our sister sites and they all had a robots.txt file... They also were getting the errors.
VBF, do it's size is used as a Guinea pig. So the IT Guys were/are probably doing something.....
-
Re: Forum broken? & 503-504 ERRORS
You can even put a robots.txt to disallow all bots, but that would not be good because you would prevent Google and other search engines from indexing the site.
-
Re: Forum broken? & 503-504 ERRORS
Usually agents tell you what agents they are in the web petition headers.
It should be possible to investigate what these 38,000 or 25,000 or whatever high number of guests are.
How they identify themselves in the petitions, what are their IP addresses from, etc.
My guess is that they might be only a few hungry spiders. But the question is, once they already downloaded the whole site why they keep downloading the site over and over again? There aren't so many new pages every day.
It should be possible to put them in the robots.txt filter, and if they don't obey it, then block them.
-
Re: Forum broken? & 503-504 ERRORS
Glad to see the number of users back down and the site is performing well.
-
Re: Forum broken? & 503-504 ERRORS
I saw this error several times this morning and am wondering if anyone else has seen it too:
This page isn’t working
If the problem continues, contact the site owner.
HTTP ERROR 429
------------------------
Quote:
HTTP Error 429, also known as "Too Many Requests," is a client error response status code indicating that the client has sent too many requests in a given amount of time. This mechanism, commonly referred to as rate limiting, is used to control the rate at which requests are made to a server.
I have a feeling it's part of the solution that out IT Guys have enabled.

Re: Forum broken? & 503-504 ERRORS
It's probably just me... I couldn't recreate it here... But when I go from here to a sister site and clock on a few things including getting into the Admin CP, it shuts me down. And I can't visit any other sister site... Until about 30 to 60 seconds then I'm clear.

Re: Forum broken? & 503-504 ERRORS

Re: [RESOLVED] Forum broken? & 503-504 ERRORS
I got another 504 error this morning........
-
Re: [RESOLVED] Forum broken? & 503-504 ERRORS
504 friends not found, byte timeout. Forum is broken for me now. Not usable anymore. Might as well be dead if this continues.
-
Re: [RESOLVED] Forum broken? & 503-504 ERRORS
Shall we start a "spare" forum on a different location with alternative software, so we can at least share our despair and determine what is going on?
Perhaps it might be time to focus and set up a VBForum discord channel just for VB6 users, another for VB.NET &c. I know the TwinBasic users have it so perhaps it is time to move toward better technology...
