Democrats, Republicans and the White House were pondering the new political reality today, after Sen. James Jeffords of Vermont left the Republican Party to become an independent, giving control of the Senate to the Democrats.

Better than that....his anti-abortion, pro-religion, school voucher, missile defense system....all of it is up for grabs now depending on the whim of congress! We may still have a country left after four years after all!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Morally I disagree, if people voted him in under a certain party banner than he should at least respect their wishes and not change sides a few months after the election....
... but hey, my Morals have a very very small minority in the parliament of my head. They almost never get their way unless they can side with Greed, Glutteny or Sloth, the three majority parties ratlling around up there. :D

He has always been the most liberal Republican (now there's an oxymoron:rolleyes: ). He is not changing his platform, he's changing his political affiliation. He is still going to vote as he always has but the democrats now get to appoint the heads of the committees and make policy instead of the republicans because they are the majority now. He switched to Independent not democratic so all he did was take the power(majority) away from the republicans he didn't become a democrat. he will still vote the way the people who elected him expected him too. Not a moral shift...just a political one.

Sloth here, (after a big lunch annihalated Gluttony, and Greed is too busy worry about the new mortgage). I do still think it is slightly reprehensible that someone raises money for and elects an individual to speak for them in government, possibly because of the party they are in, and then that person changes.
Don't get me wrong, I ain't going to lose any sleep over it, in fact I'm more than likely to celebrate, it just strikes me as a bit cheeky to the poor old voter. It's as if the voters of his state never got a Republican to vote for (is there only one person per party per state? - I'm not that sure about the American electorial system).

If you don't want your kids to go to public school, bush was going to give you 1400 dollars to go towards a private school. Sounds good....NOT
The average tuition for a private school is 3500 per year...so the 1400 helps but doesn't get you there. This is fine if you are rich enough to pay the additonal money. Good for your kid!
The drawback comes when you don't have the money or you have a special needs kid and the private schools won't take you.
What is left in the public schools are the poor kids or kids with problems....those who are already falling behind in our society.
Now look at the teachers...would you rather teach in a private school with the elite kids, or a public school with the "left-overs" and "forgotten" kids? The answer is clear...so we are left with the "left-over" teachers to teach these kids as well.
These kids don't get the education they deserve..the schools don't get the funding because they don't do well on the tests because of poor teaching or just bad environment. They grow up with no skills and they can't afford to send their kids to the good schools and the cycle continues.
It creates a virtual caste system in an already messed up and violent society...but hey MY kids would be okay so what do I care?????

It doesn't stop rouge nations, they would just put the bomb in a truck and drive it to it's destination (NY or Washington).

All or nothing would be better than leaving some of our population behind...unfortunately it takes money and there's only so much tax money to go around...and right now it's going to the public schools...where it should IMHO.

How can we tell our debtors that we can't pay them and then give your family (us Americans) tax cuts (raises basically).....meanwhile the interest is rising on the money your not paying that you should and the deficit just keeps growing until your booted out of office...then the new party comes in and starts raising the taxes to pay back the people the old administration never bothered to pay so you could get a tax break. I liked Clinton. He struck me as a good leader who was admired on the world stage. Contrast that to the worlds (and I'm including America in this) opinion of Bush.

I'm not saying I agree, just something I picked up. He ruled and if it weren't for this two term rule I reckon he'd be there doing his thing. He said as much himself.
