A few legitimate ways to stop a police officer from writing a ticket

1) Don't violate the law. That's the overall BEST way to escape a ticket.
2) Take off any pro/anti-Obamacare stickers, pro/anti-bailout stickers or what have you. You run the risk of catching a cop's eye just because he has totally different political views.
3) Make sure your car doesn't look like you bought it from the junkyard. It tells any policeman you pass that there are probably other problems with your car, such as a broken headlight/windshield.
4) Don't do anything fancy with your vehicle. This includes decorating the outside. If it's attractive, it will also attract a cop's attention.

Also, here's how to make sure you don't get caught in the first place:
5) Always be on the lookout for a policecar. When you come across a curb or underpass, look over your shoulder. Oftentimes, police cars like to hide in those places because there they are more likely to catch speeders because people speed past them without noticing them.

6) At night, if you see a car in front of you flashing its headlights, slow down. This is "Morse code" for "Speed Device Coming Up."

I'm just sharing ideas from a book I read (and yes, I'm still not old enough to drive) from a guy named Alex Carroll, who has a book dedicated to this. Now, most of the techniques he has (all of them except these) involve lying to the officer, which I do NOT condone.

Oh, and one more thing you could try is handing the officer a "get out of jail" card from the Monopoly game. Some guy did this, and the cop let him off and laughed as he walked back to his car.

If you have a heart attack and die, you can't be given the ticket.

Ignoring the other points.

#5 Police radars can track you up to 5km away. By the time you see them, they've probably already locked your speed.

#6 There are many reasons people will flash their lights at you; having your brights on, having a light out, driving like an idiot, letting you know they're gonna pass, etc.

I know a way. You have to get some salt, a few candles and a rooster. It only works on the day before a full moon and then only if you were driving west at the time you got pulled over.

While that is true, there are some states in the US where the legal range of the radar is considerably lower. I was told by an officer that the legal range in FL is something pretty small, like half a mile or so, but he also told me about working in Texas where they could get up on a hill and zap somebody many miles away, which would let them know who had radar detectors, as the person would suddenly hit their brakes and would then remain puzzled for a long time afterwards.

As for radar detectors, aren't they legal in the US?! I though under FCC rules you have the right to receive any emitted signal, but jammers are the ones that are illegal (that interfere with the radar).

The thing with radar's is that they emit a radio type frequency, which means if two cars are a short distance apart, the cop could radar the first car and the fuzz buster (radar detector) in the 2nd car would go off and thus the 2nd car would know that there's a cop up ahead and would know not to speed.
Fuzz busters are illegal in one or two states over here, but as for the rest of the US it's fine to have them, I live in MI and have one in my car, though I can't speed during rush hour traffic which is all I drive in now anyways.

There is a newer one (about 10 years old) that use a laser to measure a car's speed and while most radar detectors will detect the laser one it's still pretty much useless since the detector can only detect it when the laser is pointed right at your car which means if it goes off, the cop has already gotten your current speed... Though most police depts. cant afford to equip the patrol cars with laser guns so even today, 10 years later, most cop's don't radar with lasers.

Give it another decade or so and your cars will be reporting you directly to the police for speeding, failure to use turn signals, running red lights, failing to make complete stops, etc, etc. Just gotta get the signs (stop, speed limits, etc) and stop lights to talk to the cars. Heck the cars may even have a ticket dispenser built in, much like a receipt dispenser from a gas pump station! To make it lock tight, your car's position will be recorded via GPS, the speed, time, location and even the driver (via thumb print, retina scan, voice recognition, etc) will be recorded to the car's black box. To get out of a ticket, you'd need to get your car stolen or the black box hacked. Too futuristic? Maybe, but not by much.

Actually, I think that most law enforcements today mostly use laser radars compared to older radio/doppler ones. Lasers are long range, very precise and can only be detected when it 'tags' you, at which point slowing down is too late as it already clocked you.

Who's going to pay for all this technology to be put into Cars ? it sure as hell wont be the car manufacturers not with out huge state subsidies !

Also as you mentioned for that to work you would need Smart Road Signs, and they would cost a fortune. Which politician would be stupid enough to increase taxes to try and implement such a system, It would be political suicide !!!

Who? You & me of course. Look at how cars have evolved: seatbelts, air bags, ABS, and now rear view cameras by 2014ish. This is all in the name of safety. How many fatalities occur every year due to running stop signs/lights, speeding, etc, etc? Not too hard to imagine an over zealous government trying "to do for the people what they are too stupid to do for themselves"

To be honest, the thread title is misleading. Those tips are for avoiding being stopped in the first place, not actually stopping the officer from writing a ticket once he has stopped you. In fact, the only scientifically proven way (yes, there's proof) to do that is what I already said.

My aunt found other way to escape getting a ticket! Get pulled over by a cop who knows her son (my cousin) also a cop.

well in faroe islands in the village i come from, there are 1200 people and everyone knows everyone, and my mother is friends with with the few police officers there are... well actually there is only 1 police station in the whole island, its population is 5000 :D she has been stopped twice where she didn't have seat belt on and the officers just say "you're lucky i'm working today" and then they let her go with a warning lol

You could also try showing him the previous ticket you collected from his colleague ten miles up the road, which will probably save you another ticket. I don't wanna think about what would happen to you though...




How about riding a bicycle? Do you get speeding tickets for riding the bicycle too fast?

There is a Donation that you can make in the amount of about $3,000+ which gets you a special licence plate frame. this frame has call letters like "KMA-367" or whatnot and it tells the police officer that you are a supporter of the department and they will basically let you off without writting a ticket. You may still get pulled over but you wont get a ticket.

If you are a terrible driver, lead foot (like me) or have a ticket magnetic type car (like me again) then it may be worth making that donation lol.

You could even tell the officer, "I'm going to the hospital -- I'm going to get the lead taken out of my foot." Some guy tried this on a cop, he ended up laughing and let him off.

In California, you can get a ticket for failing to cross the road on a zebra crossing. That's while you're walking.

Actually there was a blurb on the news not too long ago here about people j-walking to cross this busy highway near the Meadowlands to get to a Jets game because they don't have parking passes to park at the stadium. I forget the exact number, but they said they gave out about 40-50 tickets.

I do have a radar detector (valentine 1) and it has saved me a few times. It has roughly a mile detection rate. I don't drive crazy fast, but sometimes you don't have to be going too far over the speed limit to get pulled over. I have been in court and heard people having tickets for 6 miles over the limit...(like 31 in a 25)

They are legal in the US on a state by state basis. I think Virginia might be one of the most strict states that prohibit them. So much so that they will confiscate them, even if you are just passing through the state. They might even arrest you. All I know is when I drove down to NC, the sign said "Welcome to Virginia" and under that it said "radar detectors are illegal". Maybe that is their state motto???

We used to have one years ago but it was illegal to use! I think the SatNav now include radar detection anyway which, makes the whole legal argument pointless.

Also, if you have an iPhone, the popular community "Trapster" has an iPhone app that will let you know when you're approaching a known location for a speed trap.

If you don't have an iPhone, they may have an app for Android.

$60 for a pizza?! I wouldn't pay for the (game) ticket that much.

you can get speeding tickets for going over the speed limit, no matter what you are on. As for the ticket showing to get out of one, i actually had to do this once as well when i had a headlight burn out. I got pulled over twice in a 12 mile trip.

it is that way. It's called jay-walking. It's usually only enforced by bicycle cops. But again, calling on personal experience, i failed a day of driver's ed when some lady walked out in front of me between two cars and after i nearly hit her because she didn't look, i honked to get her attention. I was told "You embarrassed me and you just failed today"
Oddly this also applies to the "woman in a skirt" thing. The girls in my class with the highest grades always wore skirts to driver's ed. I remember Jessica Ramaley cruising at 70 in a 55 and then speeding up to pass someone. She got an "A" that day...

more personal experience here: that's pretty much the cutoff although they can technically give one for less than that. Sometimes the cop will give you one for six over even if you were going faster. I was going 65 in a 50 and got a ticket for six over because it was obvious to the cop i couldn't afford the faster ticket.

A lot of cops don't bother if you're going 5 MPH over the limit, so that would prolly be why.
There's a town somewhere in FL where the cops pull people over just for going like 1 MPH over the limit.

If pulled over do not lie and never give away anything i.e. “Sorry I was speeding because of…” but instead let them tell you why they pulled you over. At this point unless you are female and they are male and you have a great set of “you know what” or you are male and they are female (you get the picture). The concept is when most civilians have to interact with law enforcement it is a parent child relation in that we decide not to say anything, be stubborn or out of the blue develop log-arrhea (diarrhea of the mouth) and either of these reactions increase the likelihood of getting a ticket.

Preemptive thoughts for not getting a ticket (meaning no pull over by an officer) while for this example speeding.
Police are more likely to pull over a sports car than most other types of cars; the second type is an older under maintained car in regards to its outward appearance. A combination to avoid is an old red sports car as police will see suspicious written all over this combination of old, red and sports car. It is no different than how police know that from experience when chasing a bad person either by foot or in a vehicle that the bad person will take more right turns than left turns.

Many of the people I interact with are security officers, a third of my personal friends are in law enforcement. Coupled with I have taken several week long classes (average class size 40) in police training and it is interesting what is learn on breaks and lunch or afterwards having a drink in regards to their mentality of who to pull over.

However you see a cop on your tail the easiest way to see if the cop is really following you is to make a turn. Now right turns are much easier to make without stopping, so i could see this.

The right hand turn came from a discussion while attending a week long class several years ago at American Academy of Criminal Justice where the instructor's name was Howard Webb. I have discussed this with several LEO and they agreed that the majorty of the time this was true.

For the right turn thing you might look into UPS. Left turns are slow and dangerous, so a few years back they started trying to design all their routes so that it was all right turns.

In California don't do that if the light at the corner is red:) Don't even do a "California stop" because you'll get perhaps a second ticket unless you come to a full stop before making the turn.

i remember the fallout when that law was passed. They were putting in turning arrow lights everywhere.
