It's Photo Contest Time Again! - Contest Closed
Update: The contest and voting is closed.
The contest is closed but please cast your vote for your favorite pictures .
Here are the contest entries.
The voting voting open until 8:00 A.M. PST August 19th. To vote please send me a PM like the following:
Subject: My Vote
1: John Smith #5
2: Mary Stuart #2
3: Jim Jones #4
You don't need to vote for all 3 positions but please do not indicate ties. I will give 10 points for each 1st, 5 points for each 2nd and 3 points for each 3rd.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
You may be aware of our first photo contest that was held last December and by popular request I'm going to do it again.
Same prizes as last time (none) and so it's all about ego again. Mine got pretty big last year but I know that there must be at least one better photographer than me out there among you young studs and studettes, so enter and put me in my place!
You enter by submitting photographs and I will accept them in any of following three ways:
- Upload the photos to Flikr and post the links in this thread. Optionally include a short description for each photo.
- If the pictures are small enough, put each one in a zip file and attach it to this thread. As with Flikr, optionally include a short description.
- Upload the photos to senduit. (When using senduit it's important to select the "Expire in" period before you upload). Please choose an "Expire in" period of at least 3 days. After you do that, post the link that usendit will give you here, and again include descriptions if you like.
Here are the rules:
- You may submit up to 5 photos.
- The photos must be by you (honor system)
- No "changing your mind" so think about which ones you want to submit.
- No photos that previously placed 1st, 2nd or 3rd last time will be accepted. That pretty much only affects me (see "ego" above) this time but it needs to be stated.
- Voting will begin after the contest closes (see below) and the voting will be by PM to me.
- Only members who joined prior to the creation of this thread will be allowed to vote.
- Voting for yourself will not be allowed.
- You may vote only once.
- Using PMs or emails to encourage people to vote for you is not allowed and I will consider that grounds for disqualification
Miscellaneous:
- The contest will close when 100 photographs have been received or 9:00 PM PST (GMT -8), August 11th, 2008 whichever comes first.
- I will upload the photographs as they are available to an account that I have on ImageEvent.
- As soon as the first photos are submitted, I will provide a link to the photos.
Okay I'm a few hours late but it's time to vote!

Re: It's Photo Contest Time Again!
Here's my first 2 photos. I was going to include all 5 but I have to get the file size down on the 3 other pics.
I shot all the pictures that I'm going to enter with a Canon Elan 7NE 35mm camera back in 2004 which I auctioned off on ebay in 2005. I went to a Canon Digital Rebel. I had hundreds of pictures stored on my hard drive and then my hard drive croaked and I lost them all. I had saved 100 pictures on a CD and the pictures I'm enterring into the contest are from those survivors. When I got the film developed for my Canon Elan I always requested a CD. I'd transfer the data to my hard drive and then lamely toss the CD. Not too bright on my part.
It's good to periodically save your digital pictures to a CD or some kind of permanent storage in case your hard drive dies. Some one told me that there's a service that will recover information off a hard drive that has gone bad but I learned about it a bit too late.
The bee on the flower I shot in La Quinta, California. I used some close up lenses screwed onto the end of my short length zoom. I have a few more of these pictures and had to do some thinking to decide which one was best.
The pelicans I shot on the west shore of the Salton Sea a little south of Salton Sea Beach. I used a long range zoom to get the shot.
I auctioned my Digital Rebel off on ebay also in 2005 so now I just have a Samsung Digimax 530 which I use if I want to take a picture of something so I can auction it off.

Here's another photo via senduit.

Re: It's Photo Contest Time Again!
That link is going to expire before anyone uses it. I'll upload to senduit again and remember to choose a longer "expire in" period.

There's no reason to cut the file size.

Re: It's Photo Contest Time Again!
I'm about as amateur as one can be: I hold the camera and push the button.
Hopefully using this way works as well, I'm too lazy to make an account anywhere: http://kontu.selfip.info/kuvat/vbforums_contest/ - as separate pictures and in a zip.

Re: It's Photo Contest Time Again!
Right everyone, welcome again to another photography contest.
I have improved alot since my last visit, hopefully this time I will get a single damn vote! I am open to any comments, good or bad.
I am a flickr user, here is a link to my photos on flickr, add me if you want.
McLaren Mercedes F1
I think this is my favourite picture of all time, a stunning car, obvious considering the spectators were crammed into the stand to see this McLaren Mercedes.
Renault Megane
Out of the entire weekend, this is probably my favourite picture, this is a Renault Megane parked up within the stalls in the center of the track.
Walking on water
This patch of water may only be an inch deep, but it makes it seem as if our friend is running on the top of the water.
At this point me and Lorna had walked about 50 meters apart, just to watch the dog constantly run between us.
Zebra Crossing
This is a zebra crossing at a local supermarket, it was the afternoon on a saturday so it was deserted, I did however look like an idiot standing on the top of a large bollard to gain an extra 2 foot.
Dragon Fly
On a recent trip to Northampton for an F1 testing session, me and Lorna decided to take a walk around some of Northampton, we came across a nature reserve.
These reeds were home to a load of dragon flies, I was really happy to be able to get a picture of these two together.

Re: It's Photo Contest Time Again!

Seen on the Isle of Wight
Island Sunset
Yellow brush strokes across the sky
Wheat
Widescreen wheat
Lake
Uhm... lake.
Sleeping dad and son closeup
Sleeping. Dad. Son.

A kid floating on the sea on inflated tire tubes to cool down from the heat. Cebu, Philippines.
3. Contemplating Kitten
A kitten envisioning her inevitable death a few days after this picture was taken. Cebu, Philippines.
4. Prayer Candles
Prayers for the dead or prayers for the dying. Leyte, Philippines.
5. Door Number
Notice of welcome for the weary workaholic me from the "mansion". Tokyo, Japan.

I'm not a Flikr user so perhaps it's ignorance but when I click on the links you posted I see the picture, but I don't see the "All Sizes" thing that allows me to download them

Re: It's Photo Contest Time Again!
When I referred to getting the file size down I said that because I was trying to zip the pictures at first. I noticed that after I zipped a picture the file size didn't come down at all. I thought it would or why zip it. So if the limit is 500 K for a zip and my picture is more than 500 K and zipping it doesn't it bring it down any then I'll just use senduit for all my pics over 500K.
When I clicked on the pictures by oceanebelle it asked me to sign into or create a yahoo account. What if I don't want to create a yahoo account. I don't have one now and I don't want to create one just so I can look at some pictures. That shouldn't be necessary. Even if it is free there is usually some way that you may end up paying just in terms of dealing with another thing you don't need.
Desert Landscape and Clouds
http://senduit.com/3db789
This was taken on the lot next to my own. At the time my closest neighbor was about a third of a mile away. In 2007 homes went up and now I'm surrounded on all sides.
Hot Air Balloon
http://senduit.com/1c65bd
I pulled to the side of Hwy 86S when I saw the balloon so I could get this picture. It was at low altitude. Taken in Indio, California. This is over 3 MB so it might take a bit of time to download if you don't have a fast connection.
-
Re: It's Photo Contest Time Again!
Where it says "Here are the new contest entries." Post #1. Clicking on Here is the way to go in terms of viewing the pictures. Very effective and efficient. I have a slow internet connection but I was able to download those pictures from that viewer much more quickly than when I click on the links from the individual posts. It reduces the file size without sacrificing image quality.
-
Re: It's Photo Contest Time Again!
Just so you know, if you double click one of the pictures you'll see it in Large size and underneith the picture are other size options.

No problem - less than 5 seconds.

Re: It's Photo Contest Time Again!
Mendhak your Uhm Lake is one of my favorites. Very good. Can you tell us where Uhm Lake is located. Perhaps in Mongolia somewhere? I've never been to Mongolia but I had the impression that it was rather desert like but perhaps that's only certain portions of it. When I call it Uhm Lake I'm just joking of course. I realize that you mean uhm ... lake.

Thanks, it was taken a very long time ago, so I think that's actually somewhere in Tibet, about a day's drive (east?) of Lhasa. Wish I could be more specific about its location but at least you know where to start looking now. :afrog:

Fine. You do have very good photographs on your flickr page, but you seem to choose photographs which you personally like, not photographs which would necessarily be liked or understood in the same way by others. That's what I think anyways. Are these the photographs that are at the top in your popular page?

Re: It's Photo Contest Time Again!
My submissions:
Wastwater: Lake District, UK. Apparently conditions are only this good once every 20 years. From left; Yewbarrow, Great Gable, Scafell Pike.
Clear-cut: Seeing things in black and white in Islamabad, Pakistan.
Moon and palms: A classic Thai evening scene. Outside of Bangkok, at any rate.
Creepy trees: A knot of trees in Trinidad. It was so humid that the camera lens fogged up within seconds of switching it on. Tried to make it part of the shot by coinciding it with the sunlight from behind the trees to create an alien-like feel
Self-portrait: Yup, that's me.
-
Re: It's Photo Contest Time Again!
Zaza I like your Wastwater the best. I wouldn't have thought that a monkey would be able to take pictures as good as yours.

Re: It's Photo Contest Time Again!
I took this at Whistler Blackcomb, British Columbia on a ski trip a few years ago. It's been my wallpaper ever since. I particularly like the artifacts from the sunlight.
Sadly, I lost the higher definition version of it. Still, this one looks good enough to me, especially since I use 800x600 resolution anyway.
Note: I added a white bar on the bottom of it to make room for the taskbar.

My submissions:
http://senduit.com/d5afd9 -- Fall Colors
http://senduit.com/0953ac -- Sunset
http://senduit.com/ceded3 -- Flowers partly covered in Snow
These pics are not worthy of entering into any contest. But this is what I like about this contest -- It's all about massaging your EGO. :D

I think its a mix of both, I did base my selection on my most interesting page, hwoever I didn't want to follow the normal conventions, I wanted to select ones that I liked on a personal level too.
Thanks for your feedback!

Re: It's Photo Contest Time Again!
I understand that you can only enter 5 photos into the contest. Here are some more of my pictures for anyone who might be interested in looking at them.

The quality of submissions this time looks much better than last time's. Good to see.

Re: It's Photo Contest Time Again!
Reventon I like your first entry a lot but I think you could have made it a little bit better if you used some photo editing software. You could have rotated it clockwise a few degrees to make the horizon line straighter and I would have perhaps cropped out the cable from the ship.
Oceanebelle I liked your entries in the last contest a lot. Not as much with this contest but they are still good. I would have entered into this contest the picture that you posted on Dec 17 where you said
Quote:
It's too bad I can't change my entries... :'(
Forgot about this one. :'(
You can always put it in the next contest if there is one.
And since I'm in my handing out advice mode right now, I Love My Vans you said you were looking for tips on how to improve your photos. I like your entries in the last contest more than in this one. Your McLaren Mercedes F1 shot I would have liked to see a wider angle on it so that I could see the whole car. You said it's one of your favorites so for you it works but if you're concerned about getting votes then it has to be desireable to other people.
I personally think you shouldn't be interested in getting votes. Give your best. Enter into the contest those pictures that you feel are your best photos but don't be concerned with results. That's my attitude. I think you'll enjoy life more that way. In other words it's just for fun. Don't take life too seriously. It's only a dream.
Here's a quote from one of my favorite spiritual writers, Vernon Howard:
As long as you desire to win you will lose even if you win. When you are consciously indifferent over winning and losing, you win.

Absolutely true, I would have prefered to have more of the car in there myself, but curcumstances prevented me from doing so, first issue was I was in a moving group of about 100 people, so me staying in the same placed for the 20 seconds I needed was difficult, second we also had people eaither side bending on to the car for photos, touching etc.
As far as I am concerned I got the best picture I could, I am aware that isn't obvious to the viewer.

Sending five pics shot with Panasonic Lumix FZ20
1. The monkey picture has been titled 'Simian Solitude'. The pensive look and the posture make it seem like he is worrying about something. Took about half an hour for the right moment to come.
2. The boating pic is the silhouette type. Some friends came along for a picnic and i got the shot.
3. The Sikh Bagpiper is a part of the Army Band in India and is performing at a function in full regalia.
4. The Bee on the flower (what a cliche) is titled Bee(r) Bar. Shot in a botanical garden, i was glad i could get all the detail on the bee.
5. The kid in the helmet (Dear Devil) zooms around my house on his kiddy bike, pretending he is riding the dunes of Motocross Madness. His glee was worth the shot.

I was looking at all the entries and I noticed that abhijit had 5 pictures in his post but only 2 of the 5 pictures are shown among the 73 entries. There might be some special reason for that or perhaps someone missed something.
