Please list your favourite comp games
Just wondering what everyone's opinion of ground breaking, favourite computer games are that they've grown up with - the ones that stand out through time as the most enjoyable.
My (not so much) top 10 would be this lot probably, just wondered what everyone else's would be and what the common ones to stand out would be...
- dizzy,
- dan dare,
- midnight resistance,
- doom,
- sonic the hedgehog,
- mario
- street fighter 2,
- mortal kombat,
- half life,
- fifa 2003,
- quake series

Re: Please list your favourite comp games
The ones I grew up with and loved at the time:
Tomb Raider (1,2,3,TLR,Chronicles)
The first 3 Crash Bandicoots
Descent
Soviet Strike
The ones I think are pure brilliance now:
The Halo Series.
Tomb Raider Legend (Haven't played Anniversary yet, but I want to)
Half Life 2 & Portal.
The ones I think should have got a better rep than they did, because they were excellent despite their flaws:
Battlefield Vietnam.
SW Jedi Acadamy.
SW Battlefront.
Freelancer.
And finally, the ones I want to play but haven't been able to yet:
Spore
Crysis
Mass Effect
Cheers!

Re: Please list your favourite comp games
Is spore out yet? I really really really want to play Crysis but will need a new PC for that so won't be happening any time soon.
I posted this thread after a comment I saw on here from someone who'd never heard of duke nukem & it got me thinking - me and my brother have been trying to think of what would be the most popular ones. Thought half life would popup and sonic seems pretty high up there then.
I said to him "Wolfenstein?? Ok that was a great game, but it's really just a rip off of Doom" at the time, and got the answer "yeah, but it was the first FPS to give us a decent flamethrower to fire". Guess I included doom myself as it was there first and remember spending longer on that one...
Prince of persia I didn't play the 1st time round, but the 3D one, sands of time was it, that's a tough call now you mention that. Must be the closest next one that just missed the list for me. With the MK series, I'm including all the games there as I loved them all - that's my favourite game of all time MK2!

Re: Please list your favourite comp games
I never really got Tekken myself - street fighter and mortal kombat had far more combos and special moves and were just fun to play - everyone was in awe of the 3D fighting applied, but the gameplay just wasn't there in that.
Interesting to see everyone loves the quake series and not any/so many unreal fans. I always thought quake was greater too.

Re: Please list your favourite comp games
Yep you got that right! I'd be fantastic at the game if the option for killing youself wasn't put in. They updated it on the gamecube and on the X-box live download site into 3D but it's nothing near as good as the original!
-
Re: Please list your favourite comp games
hmm it's on XBOX! hmmmmmmmmm
-
Re: Please list your favourite comp games
Yeah, is it marketplace or something they call it? I haven't got a live subscription, but there's an area in one of the tabs that lets you scan for and download games from. I've got a few demos from that and you need to pay for the full version, but I managed to get these working on the 360 using it's controllers:
Bomberman (though 3D version unforunately)
Street Fighter II
Speedball 2 (which should have really been included in my list there)
-
Re: Please list your favourite comp games
Oh yeah, Paratrooper.
And Armored Fist 2.

Re: Please list your favourite comp games

Popular now, or popular throughout the years? Those two are fairly recent. Alltime, I would say Rogue, Zork, and Doom would be up there. I'm surprised more people haven't listed Oblivion, as every RPG game seems to be compared to it these days, and never favorably.

Which Wolfenstein are you talking about? Wolfenstein 3D and Spear of Destiny predated Doom. They used an earlier ray casting game engine that really cracked open the world of 3D on PCs. Doom was the next generation engine, with many added features, such as diagonal walls and certain types of door opening.

Re: Please list your favourite comp games
Of all time - that you've ever come across, played or owned. My 1st 3 there were from one of the earliest computers I had, a C64 and were those types of games that I'd just never seen anything like before, thought were fantastic and had me hooked for weeks and months...
yeah the 1st wolfenstein, if I remember right the final boss was in a room of pillars and had huge arms with a huge machine gun in each hand...
-
Re: Please list your favourite comp games
I have oblivion and morrowind in mine. I don't think its fair to compare them to other RPG's. They are different in approach. God i forgot Final Fantasy 7. I wasted many years on that game.

Re: Please list your favourite comp games
That's the first Wolfenstein. It was built on an engine that predated Doom, and launched not just a revolution in computer games, but a revolution in marketing...which has since died out. The original Wolfenstein, like the original Doom, was produced as Freeware. Id let you download the game for free, with the expectation that you would get so hooked that you'd pay cash for the other levels (or games, it kind of depends on how you see it), which I did. I remember the first time I tried Wolfenstein 3D, and how amazed I was to see an actual 3D environment. I ended up with a whole shelf full of books discussing how that engine was made. Doom significantly improved it, and so on.
The original Zork had some pretty classic pieces that can still be found in popular culture, so that one was pretty big. Rogue was really popular on computers for a while. I recently downloaded it so I could play it again. Frankly, for a dungeon crawl game, it really had some impressive game play qualities.
On the other hand, I also found Hunt the Wumpus, and found it too easy to stay with it for long. That was a cool game....back around 1980.

Would anyone suggest any OLD OLD Games that may interest me? That I Will be able to get working under Windows XP? And list anywhere I can get them?
I forgot to mention Transport Tycoon. Spent WEEKS on that.
-
Re: Please list your favourite comp games
Pretty much most of those I mentioned at the start are fairly old - you can use a search engine to lookup SNES/Megadrive/Commadore 64 emulator" and "roms" to download freeware apps mimicking those machines. The roms are usually freeware versions of the old games that you can play on the PC using an emulator.

That reminds me of uplink - that was an awesome game and might've made the list if the save file didn't corrupt on every game I ever played on that.
