I just started wearing glasses and it has got me wondering, just how many programmers out there wear them? Its a common stereotype, but I always assumed it to be way off the mark.

I wonder just how many do wear them....
I have a slight astigmatism in my right eye which bothers me at distances over about three metres, however my left eye is fine.
I should wear glasses for things like lectures, but since covering my right eye and squinting through my left fixes my vision entirely, I haven't bothered getting them.
Maybe I should have put
"Should wear them but don't"
on the poll...
Mainly for driving.
Some people here wear contacts and use it as an excuse not to stay out beyond 11pm.
I wear contacts (which counts as wearing glasses), but I find contacts better because I can use it as an excuse to get rid of unpleasant company after 11PM.
Oh and I'm almost blind.
Ive only found out i need glasses a while ago too! I chop between them and contacts if im going to be at a screen all day! Funny thing is i blamed the headaches on air fresheners for years!
I wear glasses. Without them on, I can read small text that is 7 inches from my face, further than that and it is too blurry to read.
Mad dad used to be long sited - he could see like a pair of binoculars.
I wore glasses years ago, but I switched to contacts. My eyes change too much to have glasses.
For those who have contact lenses, what is your prescription number? Mine's -4.5.
I don't, but should for reading in poor light. The small print on some curry tins is beyond me - made worse because it's usually 1 point dark orange print on a purple background. Peripheral vision (nearly 180 degrees) and long sight is good - I can easily make out 2mm thick twigs on trees over 50 feet away. My eyes are over 55 years old. My liver's still good ;). I expect things to go downhill from here
I do, but I'm thinking of getting contacts. But they seem to be such a pain in the ass to put on/take out.
You are not meant to put them up your arse.
Well I didn't think I needed glasses. I only went to the opticians because I was getting headaches when I was reading. I thought if the worst came to the worst I would get them from reading only.
I'd always assumed I could see everything as clearly as everyone else, but now I have glasses to wear constantly.
I've never worn them. At some point I will, but hopefully not for another ten to fifteen years. My vision used to be excellent, now it's just better than average.
That was what happened to me, its mad because no i realise im blind!
So good, in fact, that you can peer into your future.Quote:

Unless you have a new Donor Opt-Out card from the NHS, in which case your skull and close friends will be safe... for now.
I wear sunglasses
I would never wear contacts. I cringe at the idea of taking things in and out of my eyes.
Perfect vision here. Not for long.. I have been smoking since I was 13..
chem
 What's smoking gotta do with eye sight? I still have 20-20 vision after smoking for about 4 years now.
What doesn't smoking have to do with eyesight.. all over Australian smoke packets are pictures of peoples blind eyes, gangreen-looking feet, yellow fingers, dead babies.. etc. To deter people from smoking..Quote:

I don't wear glasses (just normal glasses for protection against UV Rays). Although I can say that my eyesight has deteriorated a bit but I can still see fine so no need.
I wear glasses because I haven't had the money to get an eye exam and get an updated contact prescription. Once I really start rolling in the spare cash, I'm hoping to get LASIK... kick the problem altogether... I can't stand glasses. It looks too smart. It's not me.
I'd rather not have someone make cuts into my eye.
Lasers. How cool is that?!?
I am due to have have radioactive retinal discharge surgery soon.

You've rect all our fun.
The very bowels of my being quiver in response to that assumption.
I started wearing one contact (for my right eye) when I was 15 or 16.
But I stopped wearing it, for about 3-4 months now. I should be going to the oculist, but I can't find the time to do that, so I just keep walking around without contants. It only gives me a bit of a problem when it's dark and raining.
What's an oculist? :confused:Quote:

Is that not an optician.

yup thats it
It's not a wrong stereotype. Frequent viewing of video screens (in combination with eye genes) causes people to develop bad vision.Quote:

Well, it's good that you believe in truth in advertising. I have a friend who got the surgery, and it worked perfectly. I can certainly understand the appeal. I only buy the cheapest sunglasses, since I can't keep from breaking them. If I had to pay serious money for them, it would get a bit steep.Quote:

lol.
I wore glasses until 11 days ago. That is when I got PRK surgery (like Lasek/ik). Fun, fun, fun! Nothing like the smell of lasers burning your eyes....
Brad!
Yes, but how does that make you feel?
At the time a bit nervous as anyone should be when they are about to have someone slice/scratch their eyes and then burn them with a laser. However, by the time you smell the burning, the procedure is pretty much over. My actual surgery was likely under 5 minutes. The laser part that everyone is talking about was 17 seconds in one eye and 22 in the other. That's fast.Quote:

I'd reather pay a little more if necessary and get a doctor whose primary job is running lasers and working with eyes.....
All in all - it is seeming to have been worth the cost. It will be a few weeks before my vision is near perfect, but right now it seems to be as good as it use to be when I was wearing contacts.
Brad!
I wear glasses. I had an accident in 1999 which fractured my eye sockets among other things. Since then my vision is no longer 20/20 :o
5 grand for the surgery? daaamn.
Looks like I'm wearing glasses for life, since contacts annoy the hell out of my eyes.
Most places give a life time guarantee for that price, so if you need your eyes fried (fixed) again, you can get it done. Price out contacts and solution for 25 years (and/or frames and lenses) and all the sudden the "incremental cost" of the surgery isn't as bad as it initially seems.Quote:

That's about 5 grand USD at the current rates. :DQuote:

I would like that kind of surgery! But I guess I would never dare :(
I would. And will. Because I'm sci-fi like that. I like the ideas of lasers. :D
I am waiting for the technology to grow my own new eyes.
How do you know it's going to happen, can you see into the future?
Perhaps he caught a glimpse of what lies ahead...
Aah, a true visionary, Adam is.
He has the true eye of a revolutionary, indeed.
These puns are just getting cornea.
