The Intel Cheetah ad is making my browser (Fx 2.0) take 100% of the CPU.
a definite hang - CPU reduces to normal levels if i block the ad (which i don't wish to do - but the site becomes unusable otherwise.)
That's a nasty add
got a link?
If you disable flash instead of blocking the ad, then your problem will be solved and the forum won't lose out either.
But doesn't that sound like limiting yourself? Why should anyone? Why can't the troubled ad be removed?Quote:

I'm guessing because they paid money to have it shown.Quote:

I have issues every single day but I am tired to report them so other peolple are as well I guess.
You know why, JP? Mainly because of resplies like yours. I'm sorry for saying that but it's the reality - I don't want to do nothing to my system but you mostly siggest to go and disable something.
You don't even know how much 2 Minutes Ads are annoying - entire page is delayed until that thing is loaded. And it doesn't happen once in awhile - it happens every time I see it.
Would you want us to report on that every time? You will need another forum just for that - you will be overwhelmed with number of complains.
So, rather than suggesting disabling some functionality in our environments the vendor should be contacted so they would fix their ad.
Best regards and no disrespect meant what so ever.
I've had quite enough of your whining since the upgrade. YOu've done nothing but scream and whine like a 10 month old with a loaded diaper. Now, here is an official warning to you, cease or get a forced vacation from this forum. Understood?
I'll turn task manager on and watch my CPU as well. If an ad is eating resources, then I'll do what I can to verify this and report it. We can often get the ad agencies to recode it. In general, most ads that eat up CPU cycles are a result of Flash issues (as was indicated). Even so, once I can confirm it is chomping the CPU, I'll get it reported.
Brad!
I've had this happen twice - yesterday at home on the kids PC - actually got a nice "flash is going to eat your PC and make it crash" error message...
Today at work I just saw that IE was taking 98% CPU.
Can't tell what ad it is as the IE window it dead - won't draw.
Very, very painful.
I'm in my office today, so I'll leave Task Manager running with CPU performance showing to see if we can track down and destroy the issue. :)
Brad!
Doesn't hang for me, but it goes to 97% on the cheetah ad and my PSU fan starts whining like a tourist in a third-world country.
Doesn't hang for me either but my CPU Usage went nuts! I attached an image below.
Maybe you need to get a quad core Xeon to cope with the ad.
See, I agree.... you need a new CPU to handle things since yours can't keep up ;)
I've sent a message to our ad people and a high-level person to see if we can get the intel ad reviewed and fixed.
Brad!
FYI - Our VP of sales had the ad removed until it could be fixed by the agency that provided it. (This happened a few days ago)
Brad!
New Ad: Intel. Took up 52% on my Core 2 Extreme system!!! :(
Its this ad. Probably the flash 9.0b
got it. thanks.
The Intel ad designer must love to tease us people...
Thanks Brad.
No, they want to make us think we need faster cpus :D Even with my fast processor it got hit quite hard. I know its probably very hard on you guys. I'm just glad we had a gread Admin staff to take care of our complaints :D
From what I could see, the browser was only using one core. The other 9% looked more like system processes.
I often experience the same with my hyperthreading core.
I don't understand...
The affinity is set to both CPU's and still...
Anyways, shouldn't an ad be checked before publishing on an adserver? Just wondering...
The HP Dual-Core ad (the one with the flyswatter) is a regular hog on my machine.
I've seen the same thing. Really really sucks when its on multiple tabs lol
I have 6 tabs open right now, and 4 of them are VBF.. so yeah, it sucks hardcore.
OK, there is a SEVERE bias towards that ad. Out of 9 refreshes across four tabs, I got that ad 8 times.. freakin pathetic. Considering just one instance will hog my CPU... just try and imagine what 4 of them are doing. Getting very irritating.
timeshifter... you know what? I was trying to do the same thing the other day after getting it once, and I could simply NOT get that same ad again.
So I don't know if its random luck, or a bias as to when it gets shown.
I do agree its a problem, and I will address it again with the admins in our forum to try to get it resolved ASAP.
My understanding is that the ad servers are not always ours. Rather, we often point to the ad server that the advertisor is using.Quote:

We have ad specs and I'm sure our sales people present these to the companies. These are not developer types though, so they would not likely be looking at CPU usage when messing with the ads. What is ironic is that these ads end up on more than just our (Jupitermedia's) sites. I wonder if the other sites report issues with them too or if our developer forums just happen to be the vocal areas :).
I will say that our sales team is much quicker to respond to complains than they were a few years ago. They take you guys seroiusly when you raise an issue about an ad.
Brad!
I thought the Intel ad was one that was pulled until the agency could fix it. If you are still getting it and it is still eating CPU cycles, let me know.
Brad!
Brad I can tell you first hand I just got that ad about 5 minutes ago and it was eating up 100% CPU on one of my cores, which would be 100% if I had a single core machine.
Anyone for debugging the add? :D
No, but seriously, there must be a proper solution for this
What on earth could make flash use 100% cpu... :ehh:
It's likely poor loop logic causing it.
I ran into the problem again.. same ad, about 7 times in a row across 3 tabs...
The Ad is either back with a new bug or it hasnt been fixed.
I ran a performance profile and its the fly swatter animation loop that is causing the CPU to get pegged. :(
:lol:Quote:

IMO, if an ad slows the page load significantly, it gets blocked.
The quote was from the upgrade and not ads. ;)
I think it reflects badly against the company the ad is for when it doesnt run correctly. If they cant get an Ad to run correctly it would make me question their product quality. It would be better not to advertise in that case. :)
I wouldn't so much question the quality of the product,Quote:

And that is why our sales people often pull the ads when we report them. I'm not sure what the deal is behind this one, but I did bring it to Joe's (Jupitermedia forum manager) attention again earlier today so he could push the issue once again.Quote:

The ad just caused my browser to crash after taking up a huge chunk of the CPU. 10:15 GMT. I've also attached the HTML source for the page before it.
I'm using Firefox 2. Windows 2003 Standard Edition with SP1.
PS: This is the cheetah ad I'm talking about.
Just to add my two cents see what my cpu does with the intel ad...
I think Intel's just trying to prove to us that we all need to upgrade... they make the ads so proc-intensive that we either upgrade or stop visiting the forum...
Final decision;
my next processor will be AMD :D
Agreed.
Additional information about the ad: It seems to be okay while it's animating, but as soon as it hits the other screen that tells you your data is doubling every 18 months, CPU usage starts spiking... 100% on a dual-core proc. That's not good. Once the animations start again, it drops back down to normal usage.
I'd say just pull the ad. If they're doing that little to fix a clear problem, we don't need it to appear at all.
We can't just pull ads; we get them syndicated.
Then yell a little louder.
Still an issue
Thats memory useage and not cpu usage. But I,ve had my IE open for several days at least and with several tabs open its onl 110K memory usage. So yours does sound high as you only have what? 2 t-3 tabs open?
well if you look it is CPU usage also..
it is taking up 50% which is equal to taking up 100% of one core. IE is not a multicore enabled app, so it only runs in one single core, and is using all of that core. On a single core machine it would be 99-100%.
As soon as the CPU issue kicks in with this ad, is when the memory usage starts climbing. I can sit there and watch it in taskmanager slowly count up until my system slows down to a grinding hault.
It has to just be some sort of memory leak in their flash ad.. like its running a loop of some sort, and not freeing up resources...
Maybe the Intel Flash developer should go over to Internet.com's Flash site - flashkit.com for some assistance on resolving the resource usage issue.
I'm getting this problem again. You've asked us for the HTML source of the page in the past when this happened, so I'm attaching it here.
The cheetah ad is taking 100% of my CPU. Can you not complain to them about this? It's been 5 months, the ads are back in rotation, but seemingly, nothing's changed. Mired in red tape? :)
ThanksQuote:

You're using Firefox, right?
There is an extension called "Adblock Plus" which lets you selectively disable/block any particular content.
It is entirely possible (with a little experimenting) to completely block the sadi one specific ad.
