Forum Upgrade Issues

Okay, we upgraded the forum. Whenever that happens a few things always get a bit out of whack. Please post any issues you see in this thread. If you can be specific, that really helps.

what's new in this version? aside from the added functionality to the editor?

Could you possibly bring back the breadcrumb that was at the bottom of the page, beneath the posts?

I never noticed the bottom breadcrumb but the top one is all I ever used.
Probably after a few of the high priorities are complete I'm some things can be dealt with.

There is a new vb code tag but the old tags are not converted yet. The Admins are working hard on a solution.

vbcode has been replaced with highlight tags. This supports other languages as well, and it's vb highlighting is better. The vbcode button ads the tags, but you have to specify the lang by adding =vb to the opening tag

Wow I like the new php highlighting! You can even click on commands and it will link straight to php website!

None of the editor buttons work in Fx 2 (2.0.0.2) either in the Quick Reply or Advanced Reply editors

I access VBForums through AOL and I use Windows 2000, Pro.

When I click to enter a forum thread, I am getting Error Message Boxes popping up.

When I entered this thread an Error Message Box popped up stating:
Error: Line 2297, 'VBphrase' is undefined. And then the Yes No, do you want to debug.

Click No

New Error Message Box:
Line 2483, 'VB_Editor' is undefined, Yes No

Click No

New Error Message Box:
Line 65, 'VB_Editor' is undefined, Yes No

Click No

No more Error Message Boxes and everything is fine.

It doesn't seem to happen with all threads.
After logging in I first went to Classic Visual Basic and it happened.
Next, went to Visual Basic.Net and it happened.
Then to Database and it did not happen.

Not sure what this might mean, but it just started since your new update.

I haven't made any changes to my system for several months.

These are absolutely horrible - back to textbox which has very annoying scrollbars! Can we get the old ones back?

Doesnt FF have an option to disable js?

VBCODE isn't working - period.
Try this:

- paste your code into textbox
- highlight the text (code)
- hit the VBCODE button

Input box pops up instead of tags being added.
It works as expected when you click regular CODE button.

Why did we have to change that again?

and as for the new vbcode stuff I have to agree with RB - the scrollbars aren't nice.

Works fin in IE 7, but you do have to enter in "=vb" to the opening tag - "[Highligh=vb]" after the tags are wrapped. what browser and version RB?
I dont get any popup either.

The old vb highlighting was for an older version. It no longer works here. This is what we were able to find to replace it.

The popup is for the language option, and it comes up in long reply only

Others have had this issue with that buggy version. Disabling and enabling JS seemed to fix it for them.

I've tried closing/reopening, disabling/enabling js, restarting windows - no joy

I'm never use those buttons, so it's not affecting me. i guess it's just a wait-and-see jobby.

just as some more info, the VBCode button points to http://www.vbforums.com/showthread.php?p=threadnumber# for me (in the Quick Reply editor)

You might want to try the things they suggested in this thread

new issue though: the rate this post link isn't working in Fx 2 or IE6

That shouldn't even have been there. You click the scales image now to rate a post.

isn't that much less obvious?

We can add the text back in later. Let's focus on bigger issues.

As a note - we won't get everything fixed today, so please be patient. Some fixes will need to wait until tomorrow morning before we address them.

We will get to them though. The VBCode is one that is going to be slower to fix. We'd rather live with a little bit of goofiness for 24 hours and fix it right than to do a patch that then needs refixed.

The end result of the upgrade will be much better than prior to the upgrade!

No, we can't roll it back. Older software stops being supported, holes stop being plugged, and it becomes a liability.

umm eww. I dont like the way the VB code works.

Suggestion:

• Drop down button that has: VB Code, PHP Code... etc...etc..

But it broke all compatibility though. Did you guys even bothered testing before rolling it out? I can't beieve so many issues found in just matter of minutes.

Such as what? Of course we tested it. It's running on 24 other forums, going back to november of last yr.

Like Brad posted, its only the first few hours so far. After a while maybe something else can be done about the scrollbars.

The vbcode tags were a Hack, remember. Each and every of the other JM forum sites all have their particular differences but the main software no doubt was tested and runs just fine.

But VBForums is unique and different from any other site JM owns so you should've tested it with regards to VBF without relying on how other sites results.

Yes, there are several positive improvements and features with this new version, dclmp. I personally like the expandable Quick Reply box button.

I know that Rob and mostly disagree - if hack was justified in the beginning then I don't see any reason why it won't work again - it's just a plain code isn't it. Modify it. I don't buy "it wouldn't work with the new release" sorta of things.

I understand your point. I dont have access to such features on VBF but I do know Joe is a very talented and hardworking developer for JM. If anything can be done, I know he is the right man for the job. Lets give things some time to settle down and let him continue/finish the upgrade work. ;)

The upgrade was first done on a testing system. Even so, everything never goes as planned. Joe (The forum manager for Jupitermedia) spent a lot of time working specifically with the replacement of the VBCode hack (The new Highlight add-in). I tested on the system Friday and tested the new add-in as well. The improvement and functionality was much greater. Obviously, a few things were overlooked and the live templates were not quite perfect with the test templates.

Regardless. I think after 24 hours we should have everything close to resolved and the improvements will be well worth it. (For those non-VB people, we will have color coding of other languages too!)

As was stated - this forum is about the 24th to be upgraded in the last week or two, so the standard forum stuff has been really tested. It is weird stuff like the color coding that didn't get the level of testing it needed.

But hey - we didn't manage to lose the smilies this time :D Right?

Every upgrade has some growing pains. This one is no different. So far, it seems pretty smooth. Last time we lost the code tags for weeks. Now they are just a bit jiggy. I haven't a clue what the changes were, though, which proves both that the upgrade was transparent for some of us, and that some of us are less observant on here than we might be.

Now to try out the code tags:

I am not OK with line numbering and also just thinking about those scrollbars when code is posted makes me feel like "I can't be bothered"...

I am sorry but that's how I feel. It's crappy and I don't care what it takes to actually make it look "as it was" but I know one thing for sure: I wouldn't let this thing out. I understand security and such but we are developers...

Quick Reply has been enabled under the previous version 3.0.16 and 3.5.7. You dont see it at the bottom of the page?
