Build the XBox 900, with even less power than before! But it looks "better".
Get a haircut and a pair of contact lens.
I would call all my fellow highschool jocks and mock them.
i would buy texas, then build my house over the whole state and have freeways in it :D
I will buy Japan and rap like Snoop Dogg.
Drop it while its hot. Drop it while its hot.
Buy Sealand and gift it to the pirates.
then attend an English 101 class.
I would create a medical research centre dedicated to eradicating the most lethal of diseases around i.e. AIDS, Cancer etc
One man does not need that kind of money. His charity is only intended as a publicity stunt. Give the money to research that can make a real difference to everyone around the world

The latex industry will be up in arms. :eek:Quote:

or alternatively
Change the EULA of all MS products so that only people called Bill could use them(having partially read some of them, this doesn't sound that far out). Then sue everyone else for violating the agreement.
The Bill & Melinda Gates foundation is the single biggest contributor to research and fieldwork to eradicate malaria which is generally considered to be the world's most lethal disease. So basically you'd do what he does :thumb:Quote:

Ironically, he doesn't push that much publicity when you consider what his foundation is doing. If you want publicity stunts, look at Trump. Considering what his foundation has done and is planning to do, I think the amount of publicity is very understated from what it should be. Additionally, if his foundation wasn't doing something right, then someone like Buffet wouldn't have donated $31 billion to the foundation and for Gates to help oversee.Quote:

I think it is great that Gates has adjusted his focus of basically a computer for every person and instead has realized that some people simply need to have more basic things fixed -- basic things like medicine that will stop diseases that in third world countries kill, while in modern countries are non-existant.
If he applies the same monopolistic practices and the same detail for attention that I've been told he expects from those working with him, then I think his foundation will do a lot.
More to the question -
If I had Gate's money, I would hope to be able to do some of the same stuff he is doing, while also spending a good chunk to erradicate some of the issues within our own country -- issues like homelessness and quality of education.
Throwing money at problems doesn't help in the long term. I would have a lot more respect for Bill Gates if he used his power, money and influence to putting pressure on society to change a little.
Influence doesn't change society. Money does.
It doesn't when the money is going to the wrong place.Quote:

Brad!
lol what makes you think Bill Gates telling people to do stuff will make them do it?
Why would he have influence on how people are? because he is rich?
Brad is right, Bill Gates is super rich, so he does what a super rich person can do to help society, give lots of the wealth away where its needed MOST.
And you people need to figure out who you are talking about, Bill Gates, or Microsoft the corporation. He may have started it, and he may have most of the pull there, but he obviously is not the Microsoft corporation.
He has earnt a lot of respect, it goes without saying that such a prominent figure could put pressure in the right places to help out a lot more and help out in a somewhat more controversial way.Quote:

yeah like Apple, Novell, and RedHat ;)Quote:

I don't know about you, but I sure as hell wouldn't want someone to tell me what I should give away, based on my salary alone, because I could still live well without 90% of it.
You can read here about what Bill Gates DOES do with his money, and believe me its a LOT, mostly focused on health and education.
Do you know that guy? I can't imagine ol Bill being a spokesman for ANY cause. He's a controversial figure, and not exactly a charismatic speaker. The one thing he has is money, and he's doing more with it than anybody else that I am aware of. His foundation is now the largest NGO in all of Africa, which is saying something.Quote:

He wants to rack up thousands in speeding tickets, so maybe he shouldn't be a role model, except in how to use wealth for global benefit.

Let us hope he can change the real world as well as the world of computers, I'll only believe it when I see it though. Like I said, I think he could do more.
I would fund a research center to create new diseases and sell them to dictators.Quote:

I'd send mendhak to Mars and do away with his puns.
Send oceanebelle to Mars.

I would have thought that aiding Education across the world would do a lot for both
the Global Health and Global Development.
True :thumb:
Better education is needed more in the developing worlds, especially Africa. Supposedly the education is so poor that many South Africans believed that havng intercourse with a virgin would cure your of HIV
This is what I would do:
Say you're in a fast food drive-thru, and the twit behind the counter drops a Coke in your lap as he's handing it to you. I would violently shake my first back and forth while declaring in an Ebenezer voice - 'You'll pay for this!' and drive off.
The next morning when he came to work, he would be frightened to find that I had bought the company and was now his boss. I would 'accidently' spill drinks on him all day while he was forced to clean the bathrooms with a toothbrush.
Then I'd buy all the people of Britian some Prozac and put up big banner signs everywhere with smiley faces with the caption 'It's ok!'.
Thinking about what I would do with the money Bill earns, outside of the Foundation.
After setting up a trust with most of it allowing me to give amounts to various
small charities from time to time I would hire a cruise ship for a slow world cruise, and invite VBF members to come along for free. :bigyello:
:afrog:
Depending on the members you invite, that could be a reward or a punishment..... ;) :DQuote:

No because they first need access to a PC which many of the developing countries do not have....let alone a fast connection
Nope, You could have the greatest library in the world, but if you do notQuote:

be able to work without it, or even contribute to it.
:afrog:
Probably both, in any case perhaps I should start a little list.Quote:

Yeah you are right.. I am sure the Libraries built by Microsoft have no computers or internet in them  :rolleyes:Quote:

I am sure a new one built by a technology company like Microsoft will have computers and internet out the butt!Quote:

Indeed, no books. So they would require PCs to access the online libraries. They would also require education to use the PCs. Education is one of the aspects that is severely lacking in third world countries, and indeed developing countries. Typical of M$ to think technology will sort everything out
Again Microsoft is not the same as Bill Gates and Neither are exactly the same thing as the Gates Foundation. Let's not mix them up and let's be careful 'painting them with broad strokes'.Quote:

Based on transcripts I've read on what Bill Gates has said, I'm comfortable assuming he knows what is needed in Africa regarding education. He seems to have made the poor assumptions earlier in his life and now has a better grasp of what people in 3rd world countries truly need. One of the threads (maybe this one) linked to his speech for getting a "man of the year" type award where he talks about the computer he gave at one point to an African school. It had some interesting insights. That combined with some other interviews of Bill Gates tells me that he isn't just jumping in or throwing money at education and disease, but is approaching it as if it were the 90s and it were Netscape and he was Microsoft.... (You know, back when Netscape had the browser share that Microsoft has today ;) )
Brad!
As I understand it, they're physical libraries; not online.Quote:
