Do we even like programming?
I was sitting at my computer the other day about to work on my game and i thought to myself... hum.. I really dont feel like doing this, do i even like doing it? I dont know. Am I the only one who has like progragrammed something awesome and then the computer locks up and I would not dare sit and take another 2 hours to code it.
Humm... I think I llike it, maybe there are nicotine waves that are sent through VB that just suck me in to where I cant stop.
Well they do a good job.

Re: Do we even like programming?
Your probably just experiencing burnout. If you feel that you would program for the rest of your life for free just for the love of it then your a true programmer.
-
Re: Do we even like programming?
I do this for a living and for fun. I volunter (sp?) my time and expertise to no profit groups to do programming for them in my area. So I guess I love it.
-
Re: Do we even like programming?
I think the results of my coding keep me going...
-
Re: Do we even like programming?
Or like Gary is saying, if money was not an issue, would you still program 40+ hours a week. I would and do something like 80 hours a week programming and posting. :D
-
Re: Do we even like programming?
i would if i had a reason too
-
Re: Do we even like programming?
I must admit i like doing it, just i can never find things to do...
-
Re: Do we even like programming?
I've gotten like that a couple times recently. It always happens to me when I get stuck at a mental block. After about 30 minutes, it really sets in and I start thinking about other things I might be good at. Then I realize that I'm not good at anything else, go outside, smoke a cigarette and get back to work.
(9/10 if you leave your computer for 10 minutes when you have a problem, the second you sit back down; it hits you)

Dont let your computer hit you. If it does, beat it down so it knows whos the Boss. :)

Re: Do we even like programming?
I have had times, actualy had one this morning, when I just could not figure it out, got frustrated and wondered why I was programming for a living. Then it worked and I remembered why I sometimes enjoy it, when it finally works :D
However this is not a life job, sooner or later I want to head into Senior Management as that is where the big money is (about £55k a year here, that's about 100k USD)
-
Re: Do we even like programming?
I've tossed around the idea of senior management, but it's too much data modelling for me. That's the one aspect of programming that I loathe.
My ideal job is interfaces, remoting, security and business objects. You can keep your design and product support for all I care. :p
I'd loooooooove to be a director in security and penetration. Unfortunately, the jobs I've gotten and the direction I've been going isn't helping. .Net is a little too high level for the programming I really want to do.

More like coders block.

Re: Do we even like programming?
I don't know how many times I've been like this too (burned out). I even went 2 years one time w/o doing any kind of coding... I was that burned out.... Now a days, it only seems to happen in my spare projects and not so much at work. You can try to force yourself through it, but you run the risk of resnting programing even more.... or it may work, who knows. You can also try leaving it for a while and do something else (if it's possible).

TG, are you aware your MS Profile actually has spelling errors ?
Look for Vusual Basic ;)

Why is it whenever I follow a link to a page on the MVP site it asks me to log in :-S
I can't see any MVP profiles or anything.
-
Re: Do we even like programming?
One place I work the QA testers all told me the same thing... They knew when I programed something because of the misspellings. I just said I don't need to spell it right just the same.

Re: Do we even like programming?
well im 14 and i program...
i think that means that i don't make it for living or anything...
i make anly freewares cause i just love vb.NET...
i don't know bout u that live from vb.NET, but i do it cause i simply love it!
cheers!

Re: Do we even like programming?
yeah i wish sometimes a small company, like a lawn mower place, or handyman, or even the corner wing shop, would ask me to make them a custom software program. Cause I would like to do it, and know I could. Then I would have a good reason, but for now there is no desire or anything to move me to learn more than the game programming aspect. But whatever...

It happened to me last night, i thought "yes, thats how i'll do it, i'll code it in the morning" guess what... I totally forgot what i thought up :/
And then i woke up feeling totally crap :(

I truly am sad for you, those are the days you wish your computer was capabal of AI

Re: Do we even like programming?
It's happened a few times to me at the pub. I'll have a couple beers, start to relax about 4 pints later I'll figure it out.
That's when the fun starts. 8:00pm half drunk, weekday espionage missions to sneak back to my cubicle and fix the program before anyone sees me.

Oh but mine is capable of AAI :thumb:
Artificial Artificial Intelligence ;)
I still have this stupid headache... Imma set my screen refreesh even higher i think, maybe that will help.

Re: Do we even like programming?
Crises of confidence are common in coders.
I've had many in my time and these days I'm more into programing than I've ever been.
I guess you just get to a point where you can stop thinking about those litle bugs that you alwas tripped over as a newbie andsail through even gargantuan tasks in a lunchhour. I always work my lunches too :D
True coders don't stop for luxuries like food.

Does that explain why you can afford... PINK raybans ?
We're not allowed to work through lunch, my stomach tells me otherwise...

Re: Do we even like programming?
Oh I still eat, just during compile time. Which is currently about 18 second chunks.

does it take a long time to compile asm?

I get that too, but have found the (rather sad) solution - leave pen & paper by the bed so you can write enough to remember the idea. (in the pub, send yourself a text message, or set a reminder on your phone).
I'm still waiting for the solution to one issue to come to me... but I'll just keep working around it for now! If that doesn't work, I'll have to spend more time in the pub :bigyello:

Re: Do we even like programming?
I've tried to leave myself recorded messages before. They usually end up something like (leaving out the slurs):
Me: "Ok ok... You gotta remember to do this." (I always speak to myself in the third person when I'm drunk)
Me: "On your computer, right? Make sure you..."
Fellow Drunkard: "Hey, who you talking to!?!"
Me: "Dude shhh, I'm leaving a message."
Fellow Drunkard: "OMG, are you calling <insert fat girl from last weekend's name>!?"
Me: "pssh, wha? No man..."
Fellow Drunkard: "Haha, ya you are!!"
Me: "C'mon, why you gotta be like that"
*End message*
*Sneak off to bathroom*
*Call fat girl*
-
Re: Do we even like programming?
 That's why I prefer text/reminders - as long as you type a few keywords in quickly you don't forget (but may still run off to call the girl from last weekend ;) )

Thats actually second person, but we'll forgive you since you were drunk at the time.
(3rd person would have been "Ok ok... sevenhalo's gotta remember to do this.")
(1st person would have been "Ok ok... I gotta remember to do this.")

the only thing I can remember from a pub crawl is "how did I get home?"

When your drunk go home on the beer scooter, it's a ride you never remember but somehow you just jump on and the next thing you remember your at home.

I do, but it doesn't let me log in because, hey presto, I'm not an MVP :D
The net effect is I have no way of seeing the pages.

Re: Do we even like programming?
Well - in reality we all have to fix our links anyway - we are not allowed to link to our personal pages like that - but instead to the "overall index" page...

Re: Do we even like programming?
I work from home, so for starters i set my own hours.. which is terrible for a coder because that means i code all day and all night, when i feel like a break from my coding i come here (and code for other people, go figure) but some nights (normally when something is really urgent) i just can't bring myself to do something when i know i have to.. and i think (wouldnt life be easier if i just dug holes for a living) but then i crack open a can of Jim Beam and once im onto my second, i get straight into it and code and get trashed (infact im drinking jimmy right now!) until i go too far n pass out... sometimes i find rubish code in the morning from the last few minutes before passout (once i wrote C++ code in a VB app haha!) but that doesnt happen very often thankfully.
I don't think any programmer doesn't like programming, because those people do not get far.. they become technitions instead, where they can just skip the whole coding phase n use other peoples stuff whilse still acting all smart n technical to the non-computer type people :) i mean c'mon that's why we all do it, that's why we all come here, it makes us feel good that we are capable of doing these things, i know i get a special kick when i write a large segment of code that works on the first compile, makes you feel capable, i like it when i get new challenges too, just so i can get that achievement kick out of it.

Aussie's get cans of Jim Beam? That would be sweet... :)
I've started to do oxygen therapy when I'm coding at home (I haven't convinced myself I'm up to par to work as an independent contractor yet). I used to drink like crazy after work. It was the only thing that kept me sane (I have to support other peoples applications, it's a miracle I never resorted to H).
We all love to code, it's the people who use our code that we hate.

yes, we have white and black label cans :P i start on black labels to get me nice n drunk n continue on the white labels to keep me drunk :) can't believe you don't have the pre-mixed can option  although i do mix from the bottle sometimes (as it's cheaper)

PS - did anyone else get their updated card & cert from MS? Mine arrived yesterday with the correct dates on it (looks like some one forgot to roll it over from the last quarter.)
-
Re: Do we even like programming?
I figure if I were rich I'd probably program even more often than I do now, because I wouldn't have anyone making me write reports all the time. So I think I like programming, even if I'm not the best at it I find it relaxing.

Re: Do we even like programming?
Mendhak has a link to his page. I assume, that because they give us the link, that we are allowed to post it. The profile only shows the parts that we want to SHOW TO PUBLIC. Other sections can be SHOW TO MVP and SHOW TO MS ONLY. Addresses and phone numbers aren't public for *most* members.
They require a passport to keep out the bots. Wouldn't want the page appearing in Google :)

You cannot have the link to the page be a click of the MVP LOGO picture - that's the rule...

Another Home Worker.. :D.. Almost all of my spare Time is spent in front of the puter...( 9 AM to 4 AM) the rest of the time (5 hours) it's Dozing in front of the TV...
Every now and then i get some hardware Job.. And it sits there for 2 or three days before the Wife Ask's.. "Who's Puter is this?" or "Is this to scrap?" Then i remember to fix it..(Normaly its a P1 or PII that is slaved running so much software it starts to over heat).. Yank the cover off Switch it on -- 5 min later still waiting(Hourglass)... Ahh to hell with it ...the Puters Dead ... Flog the guy a PIV...
A Home office is exelent.. If something hits you in the middle of the night (or mostly in my case the morning..) runn over to your puter and code it... My O.S. "Hex editor" was written entirly between 12 and 4 at night.... In those four hours i get more done than the rest of the day...
I love coding, but it's not so cool doing it allone... The forums gives you the chance to talk to others about it..
Gremmy...
Software development is not so cool when you sit alone :(..

Wow. I do that much coding in a day. :p
Logest straight coding time is about 60 hours straight.. stopping for chow, loo, and a trip to the fridge for a beer or two every now and then..
I code about 7 major projects a year.. with a 3 week turnaround time each.. (the about 2 weeks onsite testing and bebugging) and about 6 months of user debugging
End user "This programs not working."
Me "What is not working on it?"
End user "I start the program and theres nothing but a blank screen" (I Used MDI Forms with child forms for all the different DB Tables)
Me "Have you Opened a database?"
End userCalls to some one else "What database are we using for [The App]?" - Muffled answer of other person
Me "Use Ctrl + O to open the database?"
End user"Okay i got the database open but the screen is still blank."
Me "What is listed in the Menu?"
End user"Where is the menu?"
Me "Across the top."
End user"O okay yes (reads out list)"
Me "Click on Functions, then Browse."
End user"O Okay I see now.. Thank you."
10 min Later
End user"Sorry to bug you, but how do i add a new Invoice.."
Me "Click on Functions, then Add, then Invoice."
End user"Okay Ahh there it is. Thank you."
Another 10 min Later
End user"Sorry to bug you again , but how do i remove a Invoice.."
....
Need i go on....
I'm sure many of you know this exact fustration, of having this conversation.. After the sixth of seventh time my wife filters out these calls and tells thwm i'm out on site.... (Hey.. My PC is right next to hers, but theres no video feed so they dont know i right there listening to her trying to explaing to them word for word what i said not 1/2 hour earlier....)
Gremmy.....

And programming wise, he has no idea what that even envolves.
I had a kid in my room the other day, and you know what he asked? ...we have all heard it... How do you program a game? (or application for that matter)
I mean do people really expect a satisfactory answer to that? I dont know.
And right now im at a level 5 enjoyment tonight. I want to start programming sound using directx, but my sound dosnt work. So how would I know if it works. And I dont feel like coding anything but that now.
Also I dont want to go to sleep, I want to code, but I dont... im so confused...?
