Re: OT : Which version of VS2005 are going your to buy
If I had the cash I'd get Team Suite because everything in the other versions is mostly databases and web stuff (how boring). But as you say its not cheap.
I'll settle for C# standard most likely. Maybe Pro if I save the pennies.
-
Re: OT : Which version of VS2005 are going your to buy
whatever MSDN sends my way ;)
-
Re: OT : Which version of VS2005 are going your to buy
Whatever my company buys me. Likely the Architect.
-
Re: OT : Which version of VS2005 are going your to buy
Needless to say Doomsharp will have to be badly postponed if C# turns out to be too expensive. :(
-
Re: OT : Which version of VS2005 are going your to buy
well vb.net 2003 standard was aprox 100$ so i guess the new version will a have a similar price...
and Visual Studio 2005 Standard Edition will cost aprox 299$

Re: OT : Which version of VS2005 are going your to buy
I am getting "Visual Studio 2005 Team Suite" for $0.00 :D
I am going to the MS Launch Event just to get my free copy and see if its worth staying for the developer track info.
-
Re: OT : Which version of VS2005 are going your to buy
I Rather like "Visual Studio 2005 Team Edition for Software Developers"
But as usual MS is expensive.
-
Re: OT : Which version of VS2005 are going your to buy
But if you sign up to attend one of their free Launch Events you get it for fre as a welcome gift.
If you cant attend then you could just use the Beta 2 download if its still available. also, its not for production use unless you purchase a special beta to production license.
-
Re: OT : Which version of VS2005 are going your to buy
If one buys that special license, do they also get the latest software or are they pretty much stuck with the beta?
Kyjan
-
Re: OT : Which version of VS2005 are going your to buy
I believe they are stuck with the beta as the special license may result in a cheaper overall price for VS 2005.
-
Re: OT : Which version of VS2005 are going your to buy
Why Buy when you can get it free??? Attend a Launch Party for them and get a free copy of VS.NET 2005 and SQL Server 2005...
http://msevents.microsoft.com/cui/de...?culture=en-US
There's one in Houston on Dec 6th, and I got my ticket :)
P.S. Didnt read RobDogs Post above.. :) well at least I provided a link

Re: OT : Which version of VS2005 are going your to buy
Post #7 :D I'm going on the 6th
I didnt know it was a Par'tay, thought it was just an Event. :D
-
Re: OT : Which version of VS2005 are going your to buy
Ok, 1/2 credit to Gigemboi and 1/2 to me! :D The events are filling up very fast. San Fransisco is already full.
-
Re: OT : Which version of VS2005 are going your to buy
New York one is all full :(
-
Re: OT : Which version of VS2005 are going your to buy
You get the "Standard Edition" for attending the event, according to this page..
http://www.msdnevents.com/launch/
Where can one find the differences in the versions?
Bill

Re: OT : Which version of VS2005 are going your to buy
Aw, just the Standard edition. :(
Here is the side by side comparisons.

Re: OT : Which version of VS2005 are going your to buy
Doesnt seem too powerful at all. :(
Quote:
No VSS
No Server Explorer
No SQL Server 2005 Integration
No SQL Server 2005
No analysis or management tools
Only click Once deployment tool
No Office Development support
No Crystal Reports
-
Re: OT : Which version of VS2005 are going your to buy
I have been to previous launches and you only get a time limited trial of the product (or at least that is all they gave at prior events). Sorry to burst your bubble. :(
-
Re: OT : Which version of VS2005 are going your to buy
This is about all it says on the software:
Quote:
...Walk away with it. Attend the Special Edition Launch 2005 event, and you'll receive a free copy of Visual Studio 2005 Standard Edition and SQL Server™ 2005 Standard Edition.*
*Offer only good to registered launch event attendees. Must attend the event to receive software packages or vouchers for software redemption. Limit: one offer per person, while supplies last. The software may not be resold and is not redeemable for cash. Taxes, if any, are the sole responsibility of the recipient.
Was 2003 time limited too?
-
Re: OT : Which version of VS2005 are going your to buy
I got W2K Advanced Server for free at an 'event' and it hasn't died yet.
I almost hate to get W2K3 to replace it with.
I don't think the CD's will be timebombed. At least, I hope not.
-
Re: OT : Which version of VS2005 are going your to buy
I went to a 2002 launch event and they gave out the Academic version of VS.NET. I got 2003 Pro that I cant remember from which event or launch and it was a 60 day trial limit. :(
-
Re: OT : Which version of VS2005 are going your to buy
I'm going on the 10th. I'll post back on the version that they give out. Maybe they just like our city more? ;)
-
Re: OT : Which version of VS2005 are going your to buy
So wait.. it doesn't integrate with SQL Server 2005, but it uses SQL Reporting Services? *** is SQL Reporting Services then? Seems like their making it mighty expensive for anyone not completely entrenched in the corporate universe to want to use VS 2005..

Huh? Did you mean SQL Server 2000?
You can still use it with previous version of SQL at least you could in BETA 2.

Re: OT : Which version of VS2005 are going your to buy
In the link above (http://lab.msdn.microsoft.com/vs2005...e/default.aspx) that compares the features, the standard version says "No" for "SQL Server 2005 integration" Does that just mean some drag and drop/server explorer type window won't be there, or that all of the SQLDBCommand, etc will be inaccesible with the standard version? I would think not, because they would be in the framework class collection no matter what, but I guess I'm wondering what "SQL Server 2005 Integration" means..

Re: OT : Which version of VS2005 are going your to buy
I just read the posts about the standard edition, screw that.. grrrr.. hmmm I do have a MCT I can call for a "helping hand" ;)
-
Re: OT : Which version of VS2005 are going your to buy
I've seen a newsgroup post from a launch event attendee, he got VS standard. Anyone know if this is what you would get in a shop or if it is a not-for-resale, non-upgradable variety? I'll be attending one next week...
-
Re: OT : Which version of VS2005 are going your to buy
I have verified the versions given out. I watched the powerpoint slide show of one of the presentations today at San Fransisco. Its the Standard version of VS 2005 and you also get the Beta version of SQL Server 2005. Who wants the beta version when you can download it already. :(
I'm not too sure I will stay for the presentations now as I can watch them. So I guess I will just go to get the VS 2005 Standard at least. :(
-
Re: OT : Which version of VS2005 are going your to buy
So they're giving away both, but VS won't integrate with SQL 2005? And SQL is a Beta? Hope they give out VS right away. Might not be worth listening to it if it's already on the web.
-
Re: OT : Which version of VS2005 are going your to buy
True, and also I heard in the presentation that you need at least a minimum of 3 physical systems to run the Team System. Luckily I have three for myself but I may have to upgrade one of them to handle the load.
-
Re: OT : Which version of VS2005 are going your to buy
Wow. I don't see how you guys can complain about how it doesn't have the features of the suite version. At least you get it free. If you live in the south, GA, you don't get anything free including VS.NET 2005. They should make the launch parties at every major city.
-
Re: OT : Which version of VS2005 are going your to buy
I FINALLY FIND ONE AND GUESS WHAT? IT'S ALREADY FILLED UP!!!!!!!!!!!!

Re: OT : Which version of VS2005 are going your to buy
Well for those that program professionally on their own cant do too much with the Standard version as more developers need the more robust versions to accompany their clients requests for functions and performance. Yes, its free but if we still need to buy the Pro version or higher then it does us no good.

Re: OT : Which version of VS2005 are going your to buy
Your about a few weeks too late as allot of people want free software. ;)
Its an all day session but is it al on 05? Do you get the software?
-
Re: OT : Which version of VS2005 are going your to buy
Well Microsoft loves Australia, we couldn't even get VS 2005 Beta. Consider yourself fortunate that they do launches around where you guys are at all ;)
-
Re: OT : Which version of VS2005 are going your to buy
You should be thankful that you could get your boss to fly you out to a launch event in the us if you would have bribed him early enough. Free vacation and all. :D
-
Re: OT : Which version of VS2005 are going your to buy
The nearest launch event I could find will be in Belgium, I'm on the waiting list. I guess they are pretty sparse in Europe, I couldn't find one for the Netherlands(where I live) nor for Germany.

Re: OT : Which version of VS2005 are going your to buy
I went to the Technet seminar in Scottsdale on Tuesday and received VS 2005 Standard and SQL Server 2005 with 1 CAL. So... I guess I am going with Standard. Seems to fit my needs fine.
