VS.NET 2005! November Launch
As many of you know next month is going to be the launch of VS 2005.
I was looking for advice on their launch events.
What are these events like?
Would it be beneficial for me? (Having hardly any .Net knowledge? But definetly looking into a change from VB6)
What are your experiences with these events?

Re: VS.NET 2005! November Launch
Hi,
been to teh launch of the VS.2003 and going to the british tour launch of VS.2005.
There a bit tongue in cheek but very informative indeed and you get a good idea of whats all the hype about and the where-with-all on th enew versioning. if you pick the right seminar for you, you come away with a lot of inf. If you pick the wrong one, youll probably come awy with the wrong idea as they are very focused on the subject matter indeed.
hope this helps

Re: VS.NET 2005! November Launch
I heard that they are giving a way a copy of SQL Server AND Visual Net to attendees. Just found out that it is close to where I live, so I think I'll be going on Nov. 10th.

Re: VS.NET 2005! November Launch
Since I just moved to the bay area, I'm going to the one in San Francisco on the 7th. Supposedly you get VS 2005 and SQL Server 2005 for free, the registration is free.. why not go. The "Developer track" is filled up, but I got registered on the "Database track" just a few days ago.

Re: VS.NET 2005! November Launch
Whats your opinion on the presentation content? Do you think its a marketing thing or technical?
-
Re: VS.NET 2005! November Launch
They didn't ask me what track I wanted to attend. I guess it's just a matter of going to the ones that you want.
-
Re: VS.NET 2005! November Launch

Where could I find out if there is some event in Greece? :)

Re: VS.NET 2005! November Launch
bloody hell.. they are giving away the free software!!!!!
-
Re: VS.NET 2005! November Launch
I think that can be considered "Priming the pump." There won't be all that many free copies given away as a percentage of the total number of copies sold.

Nope, you have to choose which track your attending so they have enough seats. It was on the rgistration page as a treeview layout. Check the top checkbox to attend and then below that is a general description of the event. Below that is the first child node - vb developer track with times and descriptions. Then there is the second child node that is the DB track with times and descriptions. You cant go to both as they are parallel tracks, day/time.
This is why I was asking about boing to two different launches.

Re: VS.NET 2005! November Launch
Just called to get into the developer track. They had me down for only the keynote ;)
-
Re: VS.NET 2005! November Launch
I guess I'll take that as a Thanks ;)
-
Re: VS.NET 2005! November Launch
I was just about to post about this. Everyone who attends will get a NFR copy of VS.NET 2005 Pro and SQL Server 2005. I'll be going to one in NYC Nov 22. When I went to the Office 2003 launch I got a free copy of Office 2003 Pro.
I signed up for the developer track. If anyone in NYC is going, maybe we can hang that day.
-
Re: VS.NET 2005! November Launch
Nope, its the Standard version of VS 2005. I wish it was the Pro version. That would really be worth going for.
To see the actual version being given away...

Re: VS.NET 2005! November Launch
You're right. Thanks.
I guess they were punishing FX users. I didn't see anywhere to check the track I wanted to attend, and didn't notice the absence in the invite I printed out.
I now have a new ticket. There was NO treeview in FX.
I guess that's just another site to use IE on. (I was thinking that, but figured "what could go wrong...") I guess I know now.

Re: VS.NET 2005! November Launch
Won't be long before I can obtain it for free at the college I go to. I'd say the legally burned copies should be ready around XMas. :bigyello:
-
Re: VS.NET 2005! November Launch
Thats about the time that the retail versions should be available too.

It's all booked, no more registrations accepted ... and I am just a few blocks away. :ehh:

Re: VS.NET 2005! November Launch

Re: VS.NET 2005! November Launch
Guess its not worth saving hundreds of $$$? Just the Standard version of VS is $299. Plus you still get SQL Server too. Come on, you know you want to join the dark side. :D
Edit: Congrats on 6,002 Posts! :thumb:

Re: VS.NET 2005! November Launch
Aparently I was already invited and didn't know nothing about it until late afternoon today. Our boss wanted to make a little (last minute) surprise but couldn't resist NOT to tell us so he did. :p It was surprise anyway. :) So I guess I am going to join the "dark side". ;)

Re: VS.NET 2005! November Launch
w00t w00t! Another convert. :D When you get back you are required to post about how great .NET is. :D
For me, the event is just down the street from where I used to work. If I was still working I could get paid for the day. :( I havent driven my car but a few times since quitting. Just got my second tank of gas since Sept. 9 :)

Re: VS.NET 2005! November Launch

-
Re: VS.NET 2005! November Launch

I don't drive much either - only on weekends and during the week it's a subway. Event will be (for me) like 5 minutes walking from where I work (3-4 short city blocks away). And as per "convert" - don't know about that - MS din't convince me yet since its first beta release but I do develop in .net (pretty heavy some times) for about 4 years now but not impressed what so ever. VB6 is still the language of choice! :thumb: Let's see what 2005 has to offer. I do have beta but it's still not close to be as fun as VB6...

Re: VS.NET 2005! November Launch
There was a club at college that I used to attend and Microsoft gave free copies of VS.NET and Windows XP to us along with the VS.NET Developer's Training Manual.

Re: VS.NET 2005! November Launch
Stupid MS botched my reservation. No free software for me.

Re: VS.NET 2005! November Launch
You should have printer out your ticket and just showed up at the launch. Maybe they would have made an exception and let you in.
Also, for the 202 .NET launch I couldnt go but i had my reservation. I emailed MS and asked if there was anyway that I could still get the software and they emailed back asking for my mailing address and mailed it to me. :)

I will try that. What secret super-stealth email address did you use? By the way, I brought my printed out email confirmation, and they just said "Sorry." The stupid lady on the phone said I was registered, and here's the email i got verbatim last thursday:

Found some event address on the site and a form.. we'll see if it gets anywhere.
<-- Seriously bent.

Re: VS.NET 2005! November Launch
I'm going the 10th. They used to have shuttle buses to events, but I don't think they will for this. Not enough tourists. Won't be that many there, I guess.
Not driving down there. Might take 2 hours each way!

Re: VS.NET 2005! November Launch
Dont feel too bad conipto as I have verified that they are only giving out VS 2005 Standard and SQL Server 2005 Beta. Not much of a loss. ;)

Main page for the Launch? Can you post the link?

That is correct. It is launch day here in Detroit, and as the launch is happening right across the street from where I'm currently working, I've been popping in and out most of the morning. I was disappointed when I found out about what they were actually giving away, but, I have the good stuff from my MSDN subscription.

Re: VS.NET 2005! November Launch
Can you confirm the give aways? I verified from the presentation slide show at San Fransisco that I watched last night.

No Microsofts main page. ie ; www.microsoft.com
-
Re: VS.NET 2005! November Launch
Yes, but it was mentioned that they will be making some versions available for free for a limited time. I dont think these are the same as the version given out to those that actually attend or you could just stay home and download the software. Not much incentive to go if it was that way.
-
Re: VS.NET 2005! November Launch
Well I can't go, so I'll asume it only trail versions :p

What I saw being handed out was VS 2005 Standard. I didn't see what, if anything, folks were getting for either SQL Server or BizTalk, but I don't thing SQL Server 2005 is ready for production, so Beta makes sense to me.
-
Re: VS.NET 2005! November Launch
Yes, the launch and the actual release are two different things. Oh well, I wont install the SQL Betta as I have it coming in my next quartly update from MS. So I should get the RTM version of 05 Standard.
-
Re: VS.NET 2005! November Launch
Also, the SQL Beta version probably doesnt have SQL Reporting Services.
-
Re: VS.NET 2005! November Launch
I don't care about the SQL Server version myself..(still a foolish DB2 Lover here) but the Standard version of VS 2005 would save me 200 bucks. And I don't think I need more than Standard anyhow.
I got an apologetic reply back, (Along with an "Oops.. we're sorry, you should have gotten to go now that I look at your Conf. number, our bad") and the lady said she'd get back to me this week about if she can get the software to me.
slightly OT - Does anyone know from past experience how the "Upgrade" versions work (in case I do have to buy it) I Would probably at some point want to reformat and use whatever new OS is out, would I wind up having to install 2003, then 2005 in that case?
Bill
-
Re: VS.NET 2005! November Launch
Usually their upgrade versions, like at least with Windows, requires verification of having the media at least and not requiring it to be installed.
You can with windows installs install the upgrade version and then it will prompt you for your original CD that contains the Full version, pop the CD in let it scan it, switch CDs back to the upgrade and viola! Fresh install from an upgrade version.

Jeez. 36 degrees out, and I have to walk a few blocks to the bus stop to get to the show. Sure hope it's worth it!
