VBF Fx Extension problems...[serious] [resolved]

Firstly, thanks to the entire team who created this ownderful extension, it works perfectly on normal Fx installations...
But, i didn't do a normal Fx installation, i have mine installed on a USB memory stick, like many other people i know.

It installs fine, and every option apart from the Smilies work, when the Smilies section attempts to load its list Fx simply crashes and i have to reload it, i have tried myself taking the Smilies section out, but to no avail, can anyone remove that section for me ? or show me howto properly ?
This is the only thing stopping me from using the VBF Fx Extension properly on my USB stick, any help would really be great :thumb:

I knew i should have have added the [serious] tag to my thread.

Come on people, i have tried removing the smilies section from all the files possible, theonly one i can't edit properly is the .jar files, and when i look the smilie section is in there...

Still, can anyone help ?

The Jar files is ZIP files. Change the last name to zip, then unzip it.'

Oh, i was under the impression it was the XPI file that was a Zip file in disguise, never realised the jar files were too, i'll check it when i get home. Thanks.

Both are...:) the rest of the files there is more or less not in use at all. It is just Nebuloms way of confusing all developers...it has given us a few headackes before...

to go further. once you have have unzipped the jar file, go into content/vbf/vbfOverlay.xul. That is where you will find the menu options.

Still don't understand why the autoupdate thingy suddenly broke though. What version is the one you have now Cander. It is 0.2.6 right? The one on the server is 0.2.7, so grrrrrr...

Ah, thankyou so much, maybe after i've sorted it i should upload it so other users of Portable Firefox can enjoy the VBF extension.

I will be home in about 45mins now :)

Yeah, so if you go to tools, extension, then press update, in theory Fx should download the new version with the new smilies. The mendhak smilies that is. But for some reason that is not working...

No, i'm not blocking your page, i tried to d/l it, your site is in the allowed list, so no problems there, but, when i try to update from 0.2.6 nothing happens because Fx cannot find an updated file. are you sure you changed the section that shows an updated file Note ?
Just a thought.

Anyways, i'm at home now, i'll post whether or not i successfully edited the .Jar files... :)

I just updated successfully to Version 0.2.7. Worked fine! It did not update automatically but after manually updating it ("tools, extension, then press update") it works with the new smiles!

Wow..you managed to get it to work? So then I guess it is some delay somewhere then. Because what you just did now is not manualy, but semi automatic. Just the idea of FX finding it is the automatic part. Fx usualy just check for new updates when you restart the browser. So if you had restarted it in stead of pressing the upadte button, it would have been fully automatic. The problem was that when I clicked that button, then it didn't update at all. It didn't find a newer version. But then again, it might happen that I had a dev version and not the official one installed all ready though.

I am finding some very cryptic information about a new tag called <em:updateHash> where you spoecify a hash for the extension for secuirty purposes, but as usual none of this seems to be documented. Don't know if this is a new required feature. I will keep looking

Still having problems removing the smilies section, i have removed it from the overlay.xul file in the .jar file, you know the one i'm on about. but still it persistently appears in the portabe Fx's menus... any help ?

Maybe a dumb question, but you ARE re-zipping it back up and installing it arent you?

Yep, i am.

The closest i've got as far as i'm aware is when Fx threw an error about the vbf.jar being malformed, so i tried again, and STILL the Smilies extension exists and crashes portable Fx :(

Could anyone take a look and maybe email me the edited vbf.xpi to [email protected]

Was it only the smilies you wanted to take away from the menu? Try this version. Rename it to vbf.xpi. I am too lazy to test it my self.....need to read a master thesies here anyway.

I think that may have been me. You can remove it. I was playing with the idea of seperating smilies into groups with tabs.

Now it worked to press update for me....did it work for you Mr. C?
