HUGE problems... [RESOLVED]

Ok, I have HUGE and little problems, lets start with the little one:

1. I need a software who could transform Bitmaps into Icons (I know renaming a 32x32 bmp does a ico, but the format isn't matched by all programs...)

And now the 2 HUGE problems

2. My msn doesnt work anymore and I am unable to communicate with my programming crew :eek: :eek: :eek: , here is the letter I sent to MSN online help:

Hello, my problem is this: I had MSN4.x for
a long time, because I have a modem 56k,
therefore my download speed is slow. One day I
decided to download MSN6. However, the software
gave me an error message saying to me that my
username is incorrect each time I attempt a
connection. I evaluated several possibilities
who could cause the problem. The 2 only ones which
looked logical are:

- My speed of connection is too slow

or

- My *Personal Computer* is recognized like the one
of a company and for this reason it can't function
correctly. (Because the access to MSN6 with the
computers of a company are blocked, right?) Not
being able to fix my problem, I thus have reinstalled
my software then reinstalled MSN4.x, but now, I can
open a session MSN, however, if I speak to somebody,
MSN crashes, then my question is this:

How can I used your software with the new version of MSN6,
if not with MSN4.X?

"Uninstall msn6 and install msn4"... LIKE I HAVNT TRYED! sorry... im outa control here :( ... any help on that would be VERY appreciated...:rolleyes:

And now, the third Big ass problem:

3. My Printer/Scanner/Photocopier all in one doesn't work anymore!!!!!

I installed the drivers and stuff with the Setup.exe on the CD, On the Account "X" and then realised it wasn't on the other user account "Y", so I uninstalled the old printer driver (Epson MX) on the "Y" account and it uninstalled the good drivers for my new "all-in-one"... So I uninstalled the entire software, and reinstalled it...

However, my dad said he havn't got much time, and SHUT DOWN THE COMPUTER WHILE IT WAS INSTALLING.... then the freekin Installation got quite corrupted:

Everytime I start Setup.exe on the cd, it tries to continue the installation wich is screwed... and blocks at 54% giving a NOT UNDERSTANDABLE error (msgbox without context, and with a title of ASCII chars... :confused: ) so I uninstalled the software and reinstalled it but it doesnt fix the problem...

My guess: Some registry key is giving the software crap because the installation was corrupted...

You mean reinstalling windows (patching it)

Or you mean Formating and resinstalling -> Wich I cannot afford: I have way to much database to save and I can't just burn CDS, I have to save registry stuff... And after I saved the entire registry, My computer will be exactly the way it was before... so it wouldn't do any good...

Any more suggestions??? about #2 and 3

Try to re-install the os, not format it, but just install it over the old one.

Na...just format and reinstall...it's the only way :D

Come on, I never formated my com since I bought it, and that was around 3 years ago. There is a solution to every problem, if anyone could help me figure these one out, It would be very appreciated...! :(

Well, As I mentionned before, I really can't format my computer because I don't have the setup installation file of every program on my computer... And since I have a 56k modem, can you even imagine how many weeks / years it would take to install everything back?!

Personally I think you are going to have to loose ya files. Your PC could have god knows what running on it. To be fair, I think most people back applications up...even people like me, when I had a 56k link.

What you could do, it get a copy of Partition Magic and split your drive. Put all your installs etc onto one drive, plus any other documents you require, then toast the C drive.

It's like saying your car's broke and then saying that you've never ever had it serviced, changed the oil or had your brakes checked. I am just trying to think what kind of a mess my PC would be in after 3 years...nope, my imagination doesn't stretch that far :(

I agree, yo at least need to do a complete format and re-install every 1/2 year to a year at the most. Just normal use will eentually screw stuff up. You should backup all the Setup Files you have. Having Multiple partitions helps alot, I have 5 partitions: My Partition Setup

I really makes it much easier with multiple partitions. I first only had one but found out how much easier and more organized I could be with multiple partitions.

Well even taught everybody seems to disagree with me, I don't think I should format my com, and here are solutions to your problems:

- Anti spywares
- Antivirus
- Firewall

With those you can be okay easily... and still if your computers loded with crap like mine sometimes, I just run Add/Delete programs, delete a few programs unused...

Plus, usefull programs running:

Start->Execute->Type "Msconfig" then in the Startup Tabber
Uncheck undesired programs to run on startup...

And for the registry, I agree, its loaded with crap, but there are programs to clean it up like RegClean... well I guess I've made my point and my com works as good as new...

Know what? I found the STUPID problem with my msn: it needed internet explorer 6... because I had like 5.0... it didn't work!

Well, I still need help for my printer problem, anyone?

Spybot search and destroy.

I bet if you do a clean install then your pc would run wayyy faster.
But it's up to you. Personally I think u are wierd and not quite right in the head...but that's just my opinion :D

Stay away from partition magic!!! It messed up completelly my drive when I went to make a backup partition!!! And I lost 5 years worth of stuff. STAY AWAY!!!

partition magic 8 has served me well...

Well maybe I was a bit...*ahem*... But seriously, Partition Magic 5.0 is the program I curse every day. It really pissed me off with the sh*t it did. I couldn't even recover anything with some recover programs I found :( Anyway, maybe it might be better now... But next time I did a partition was with fdisk... Safer since you don't have anything to lose :)

Buy/borrow a 2Gb HD...copy all ya files to it that u need...then toast ya main HD and do a reinstall.

Well, it seems to me that formatting a computer is more of a tradition then a solution to anything. Nowadays, when you go see a technicien to fix your computer, after 2 minutes of trying to fix it, resolutes to formatting your computer (I understand for network computers who can be ghost and is way quicker than to try to solve the problem for hours, but not for personnal computers!)

Anyways, I guess what I am trying to say is that formatting a computer isn't more nessary if you can fix problems... I feel no need to format it and probably never will... However, I agree with you all that making backups are essential, and of course I made a lot on CDS and even hosted files on freeservers. The only need for backups is if somthing very dangerous should happen, by dangerous I mean air going into my hard drive, screwing it up or overheat, etc, major problems, not some little virus or guy pretending to be an 3l1t3 h4x0r...

Here are a few events my computer survived without formatting:
- Mother board Burned
- 86 virus
- Around 20 "hack attempts"
- A major bogus in windows creating a hard drive, that one is funny, not sure if its a virus:

Once, I booted my com after making a partition, and it said the following, btw I have a 20 gig hard drive...: [Drive C] total space = 20 gigs, [Drive D] total space = 10 gigs... I taught ok, thats an error, and I copyed a file to see if an error would occur... you know what?! While there was around 200 megs left on my C drive, I installed never winter nights on my "virtual fiction drive D" (around 1.2 gig of stuff) and the game ran properly !!!!! I understood a few days later what the hell was happening: Everytime I created a file anywhere on D drive, exeeding the capacity of C drive, it screwed up files in C drive, so I only lost a few database of Mp3s, luckyly!!!! lol, that was actually funny when you come to think of it, nyways...

Guess I made my point... And if you still don't agree, feel free to argue!

Network engineer do that as they have maybe 10-20 PC's to fix. It far more cost effective to do a format than to piss around for hours trying to find out what was wrong.

Well... Here's how I got around 50 viruses at once:

I had many viruses because I moved files from my 436 computer to my lil Pentium, then I realised something very stupid:

I had viruses on my 436 that couldn't work because it needed a version of windows equal or higher than 95 and I had win 3.11 for workgroups... And when I copied an infected file, my com got infected, It spammed the drive but my mcaffee found around 50 viruses on the next boot so my com got ok...

Then there were lame viruses like MSBlast, WinUtilities, Etc, I found out that pretty much all viruses work with the same pattern and figured out the way to kill them all easilly:

Windows viruses:

They pretty much allways run in the systray, you just have to shut them down, and then delete the exe file, and remove suspicious fiels on boot using MsConfig...

Some viruses boot back automatically When you shut it down with explorer... if you hav xp, just shut down explorer.exe, then shut down the virus file, then New task: explorer, and everything is back to normal!

DOS viruses:

They practically all infect the autoexec.bat file using they're own booting program... Normally a simple CTRL + Break does the job, if not, try booting with a disk, and everythin's ok... (modify the autoexec.bat back to its original state after!)

If anything should happen to the computer, I have backups on CDS, and on hard drive (for instance REG backup, and vb projects)

But I don't want to do a clean reformat of my com because there are many programs installed on my computer that I havn't copied the installation file(s)...

Yep, don't you find it usefull?

It's a program I'm going to publish because of a project im working on with a crew of game making... but some of them program in C, others in VB, other in GML (unknown language for most people, but good if you know how to use it ;)), so I taught of a way to share all variables threw a program and why not add functions to it...! I will also add a lot of Math functions to add / multiply, etc variables or number into variables...

So you like it? :p

Most of the functions can be achieved easily via windows and with the new generation of keyboards you can set special functions for extra buttons.
Personally I would never use anything like that, I just have no need, but in saying that, others may find it very useful. Go for it.

It seems that you are wrapping VB around a scripting language that you have come up with, you could really create things with it, just run set command it a certain order.

When you say "publish", do you mean sell?

It's not really for personnal use, think of it as an attachment for a program... It will only add functions to your programming language. Mainly the software is for programmors. And yes, I taught of selling it... maybe not just selling the softwares because I suck @ marketing, but maybe selling the source code... That could value much... I think...!

It's a harsh world out there and someone will only write their own version...The functions you have used arn't that useful, in programming terms. No offence but I would just use API to achieve what your scripting application does...:( That's if I ever used those functions.

You don't seem to understand, trully it is easy to do in visual basic, but in other languages it might be very hard to figure out... Also this isn't the main goal of the program:

The main goal of the program is to share variable threw a program enabelling a C program to share variables with a visual basic program... and so on, and while I did this, I said to myself, why not add functions besides variables...

Also, soon I will enable variables to be shared threw the internet, and so programs could use theses variables, any program... VB, C, QB, GML, etc...!

Its original concept, I think, was never created before and might become popular... that is why I wish to sell it...
